Bibles Handed Out Near Nebraska School Worry Some Parents

holy-bibleLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Parents are concerned about a group distributing Bibles near a Lincoln middle school, but school officials aren’t sure how much can be done about it.

A group of people distributed Gideon Bibles outside Lux Middle School last week.

Parent Mary Anne Andrei complained to the district and to the American Civil Liberties Union afterward because she was concerned no one screened the people distributing Bibles. And she says the practice blurs the separation of church and state.

The district’s John Neal says school officials don’t have authority over the group handing out Bibles because they stand on public sidewalks.

The group generally lets the school district know about their plans as a courtesy but doesn’t have to get permission.
