LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Family members and doctors treating an 11-year-old boy critically injured earlier this month when a truck hit his bike, then sped off, say the boy is getting better.
Dominic “Dom” Walker was riding his bike to Culler Middle School on Oct. 1 when he was hit by a pickup that police say ran a red light.
The sixth-grader wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time and suffered life-threatening brain injuries.
Doctors say the swelling of the boy’s brain has slowed, and his bruised lungs have strengthened. Doctors hope to remove a ventilator tube in the coming days.
Prosecutors have charged 24-year-old Jared St. Louis, of Lincoln, with felony drunk driving and leaving the scene of the accident.
