NP Mom, Son Jailed Together After Driving Debacle

When we think of quality time with our mother, we probably don’t consider a trip to jail.  However, that’s exactly what happened with one North Platte mother and her son.

At around 11:38 p.m., on November 5, a North Platte Police officer on patrol in the 1900 block of Rodeo Road, observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

The officer conducted a traffic stop, and as he approached the vehicle, the driver, Lucas Sellers, got out and began to walk away against the officer’s orders.

Police say Sellers eventually turned around and acknowledged the officer, then began to walk away again.

The officer was able to catch up to Sellers and place him under arrest.  He reported that Sellers smelled alcohol and appeared to be under the influence.

As the officer was dealing with Lucas, the passenger in the vehicle, his mother Pamela Sellers, moved over to the driver’s seat and started the vehicle.

When the officer told Pamela to shut the vehicle off, she drove away.

Another officer was able to conduct a second traffic stop on the vehicle, and make contact with Pamela, who was also believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

After both mom and son failed their field sobriety tests, they were placed under arrest for driving under the influence of liquor and obstructing the police.

It was then discovered that a five-year-old child was in the vehicle.  As a result, both were charged with child abuse.

Police say the child was placed in the care of a responsible adult, and the Sellers were taken to jail.

Lucas refused to take a breath test, and picked up another misdemeanor charge for that.
