LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln’s bus service will be adding new vehicles that operate on compressed natural gas after receiving a $2 million federal grant.

Mayor Chris Beutler announced the grant on Thursday. The city will purchase three news buses and two trolleys within the next year. It will also buy a bus-driving simulator.

Beutler says the city bought its first five natural gas-powered buses earlier this year and that the fleet will grow to 29 vehicles during the next two years. The new buses will be used in lower-income areas of the city.

The Federal Transit Administration says 24 cities were selected for the grants out of 282 applicants.
