LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 44-year-old Lincoln man has been sent to prison for severely injuring his 5-month-old son.

Raad Al-Masaudi was sentenced on Thursday to 54 to 60 months. The former resident of Iraq had pleaded no contest and was convicted of negligent child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

Prosecutors say they don’t know for sure whether Al-Masaudi shook 5-month-old Elijah or threw him into something on Nov. 12, 2013. Al-Masaudi told the boy’s mother that while she was out shopping that the boy’s toddler sister head-butted the infant. The parents took Elijah to a hospital. Police say Al-Masaudi’s account was not consistent with the boy’s multiple brain bleeds.

Deputy County Attorney Jim Rocke says he’s learned the boy likely will suffer lifelong consequences.
