Chief: Omaha Police to Purchase Body Cameras

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Police Department plans to purchase 30 to 50 body cameras for its officers early next year.

Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said it could cost about $180,000 for 50 cameras and a three-year contract. He says the department will use money from its seized-assets fund to pay for the equipment.

Schmaderer says a 12-camera pilot program over the summer went well. A deputy chief says officers felt suspects behaved better when they knew they were being recorded.

About 400 of the department’s 800 officers will be considered for the cameras. He says the department will likely purchase more if they are determined to be useful. Schmaderer says the department is researching what type of cameras to purchase.
