The Colorado Rockies made their first significant move of the offseason yesterday, trading one of their leading home-run hitters from last season. The Rockies shipped Ty Wigginton to the Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named later or cash. Wigginton signed a two-year, $8 million deal prior to the 2011 season. Signed as a utility player, Wigginton took over as the team’s everyday third baseman. In 130 games, he batted .242 with 15 home runs, a total that tied him for third on the team. He collected 47 RBI but struggled with runners on base, batting an appalling .163 with runners in scoring position. The two teams will split the remaining $4 million on Wigginton’s contract. Wigginton’s departure means the Rockies should be in the market for a third baseman to compete with Ian Stewart for the everyday job in 2012.
