North Carolina Man Convicted of Tax Evasion in Nebraska

dept.-of-justiceOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A North Carolina man has been found guilty of not paying his federal income taxes for the three years he worked in Omaha.

U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg says a jury found 59-year-old Chet Lee West of Nebo, North Carolina, guilty Tuesday of three counts of tax evasion.

West faces up to 15 years in prison when he’s sentenced May 18.

Federal officials say West failed to file tax returns or pay taxes on the more than $272,000 he earned while living and working in Omaha from 2007 through 2009. Officials also say West gave his employer numerous letters and affidavits stating he was not required to pay income taxes and that he deposited his income in variously named bank accounts in an effort to hide his income.
