Kid Rock is OK with Romney using “Born Free”

Kid Rock is okay with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney using the title song from Rock’s Born Free album as his campaign theme, according to Yahoo. But Rock stopped short of endorsing the former Massachusetts governor, saying in a statement, “He and anyone else who wants to use my song do not need my permission. I said he could use it and I would say the same for any other candidate. I have to have a little faith that every candidate feels like he or she can help this country. Without faith, we got nothing. I make music to have it be heard. Merry Christmas folks! Rock on.”

  • Rock added, “Any candidate who makes ‘So Hott’ their theme song has a good chance of getting my vote.”
  • Rock was known for supporting George W. Bush during his tenure in the White House, but did not endorse either John McCain or Barack Obama in 2008.
  • He was quoted saying at the time that entertainers “should keep their mouth shut on politics.”
  • Rock is just wrapping up a club tour during which he has donated money to local charities, causes and individuals at each stop on the trek through his Kid Rock Foundation in association with business people from his hometown of Detroit.

  • Is Rock right? Should entertainers stay out of politics or do they have the right to express their views just like anyone else?
  • Do you think it’s true that most entertainers have left-wing views? What about guys like Staind’s Aaron Lewis, who’s very right-wing — should he keep his mouth shut too? Should Ted Nugent?
  • Even if it’s not meant that way, does allowing a politician to use your song give the perception that you support that politician?
