OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two Omaha groups are collaborating to make sure thousands of Omaha-area children don’t go hungry this summer.

The Omaha Salvation Army and Food Bank for the Heartland are collaborating this summer for the Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen program. In its fifth year, the program brings hot, nutritious, free meals to the places where children live and play, such as parks, libraries and apartment complexes. Children 18 years and younger are eligible.

The meals are prepared by Westside Nutrition Services. Mutual of Omaha employees are donating more than 1,200 volunteer hours to help.

Utilizing four food trucks, the program distributes meals to 15 mobile sites in Omaha, Bellevue, Ralston, La Vista and Plattsmouth. Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen operates through Aug. 7 on weekdays. This summer’s goal is to provide 50,000 meals.
