OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot Tuesday morning by a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy had fired a gun at another deputy and had earlier threatened to shoot police if confronted.

Sheriff Tim Dunning said at a Tuesday afternoon news conference that a deputy stopped 32-year-old Taylor Culbertson in a west Omaha convenience store parking lot, suspecting Culbertson was drunk. Dunning says Culbertson got out of a sport utility vehicle and fired a handgun at the deputy. A struggle ensued, and another deputy who arrived on the scene shot Culbertson, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

An officer safety bulletin sent out June 8 by the sheriff’s department warned that Culbertson was likely armed and had threatened to shoot police if confronted.

The deputies were not injured.
