Suicidal Man Takes Own Life after I-80 Standoff (Update)
(Omaha, NE)- The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) is releasing the name of the man who took his own life following a brief standoff on Interstate 80.
Jacob A. Kraatz, 20, Valparaiso, died of a self inflicted gunshot wound inside his SUV on westbound I-80 near mm 428.
The incident began around 12:30 p.m., when a trooper received a hit on the license plate of a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor. The driver of the SUV was named in a broadcast for a suicidal party out of Lancaster County. At the time the vehicle was parked at the Melia Hill rest area near mm 429 westbound I-80.
The trooper observed a man come out of the rest area and get into the vehicle. The male driver exited the rest area onto westbound I-80. The trooper then stopped the vehicle. The driver pulled over and refused to exit the vehicle. At that time, he laid down in the SUV and would not respond to officer commands.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m., the Sarpy County Emergency Services Unit approached the SUV, where they found a single male subject dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident close east bound lanes of I-80 at the Mahoney Exit (mm 426) for approximately 90 minutes. All but one westbound lane of I-80 was closed for several hours as NSP investigators processed the scene.
A grand jury will be convened as required by Nebraska law anytime a person dies while in police custody or in the process of apprehension.
NOT GUILTY: Casey Anthony acquitted –
VIDEO:
Story by Kyle Hightower (AP) ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – A Florida jury has acquitted Casey Anthony
of murdering her 2-year-old daughter Caylee.
Anthony showed no reaction when the jury’s verdict was read
Tuesday after more than 10 hours of deliberations. But she began to
cry shortly after and hugged her attorney. She could have received
a death sentence if she had been convicted of first-degree murder.
She was found guilty of lying to investigators. Judge Belvin
Perry will sentence her Thursday. She could receive up to a year in
jail for each count.
Caylee disappeared in June 2008 and her body was found in woods
near her grandparent’s home six months later.
The lead defense attorney for Casey Anthony
says he is happy that his client was found not guilty of killing
her toddler daughter, but that there are no winners in this case.
Attorney Jose Baez said Tuesday that 2-year-old Caylee Anthony
died far too soon and that he has mixed feelings about the case. He
says he is ecstatic for Casey Anthony and wants her to be able to
grieve and grow, and somehow get her life back together.
The jury did convict Casey Anthony on four counts of lying to
law enforcement.
Baez also acknowledged prosecutors, calling them a fine group of
attorneys.
