Warm temps help Neb. crops but flooding a worry

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Warmer weather is helping crops grows in
Nebraska as farmers brace for flooding along the Missouri and
Platte rivers.
The weekly crop report on Monday said warm, dry temperatures
early last week boosted development of corn and soybeans and the
harvesting of hay. Cooler weather moved in later in the week.
The report says winds eased, allowing farmers to spray for
weeds.
Flooding along the Missouri and Platte river is affecting
low-lying areas.
Ninety-eight percent of the corn crop is up, and 74 percent is
in good to excellent condition. Soybean planting is nearly
complete, with 84 percent emerging. Seventy-five percent of the
soybean crop is in good to excellent condition.
The first cutting of alfalfa is still lagging, at 59 percent
complete.

Man from Dix gets 5 years for child pornography

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Federal authorities say a man from Dix has
been given five years in prison for receiving child pornography.
A news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg says 28-year-old Richard Marks pleaded guilty in December.
At his sentencing on Friday, Marks also was ordered to serve five
years of supervised release after his five years behind bars.
Gilg’s office says that in 2008, Nebraska State Patrol
investigators were monitoring file-sharing software that allows
people to download child pornography. The investigators were able
to pinpoint Marks’ computers by verifying his Internet protocol
address.
After serving a warrant on Marks’ home in Dix, investigators
found more than 100 digital images and 25 videos of child
pornography on his computers.

NRC requires more oversight of Neb. nuke plant

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Federal regulators say southeast Nebraska’s
Cooper Nuclear Station will receive more oversight.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Monday that it’s
requiring additional oversight because of problems with procedures
to shut down the plant in the event of some fires.
The NRC in a statement focuses on procedures to manually operate
values that are part of a coolant injection system. That system
provides water to cool the reactor during certain accidents
involving the loss of coolant.
The NRC says the violation is of low-to-moderate safety
significance, and is based on an inspection completed in March.
The plant at Brownville is operated by the Nebraska Public Power
District. NPPD spokeswoman Jeanne Schieffer says
the company accepts the NRC’s decision and will work with the
agency going forward.

One Arm Bandit performs at Buffalo Bill Rodeo

North Platte, Neb. – June, 2011 – A man with one arm might be limited in what he can do. But not for the One Arm Bandit, John Payne. John, Shidler, Okla., has taken a disadvantage and turned it into a good thing.

The 58 year old cowboy lost his right arm in an electrocution accident in 1973. After ranching for years and going broke twice (“the last time I went past being broke” he jokes), he become a pro rodeo entertainer.

He was at a rodeo with a stock contractor friend when he mouthed off that he could do better than the entertainer who was hired. The friend said, “we’ll let you be entertainer next year.” So Payne went to work.

By rodeo time next year, he had trained Corriente cattle to run on top of a trailer, with blackmouth cur dogs. It was a hit, and Payne’s act was born.

That was in 1987, and since then, he has trained mustangs, mules, longhorn-watusi steers, and bison to go up specially designed ramps on the tops of trailers and trucks.

His act has exceeded what mouthed off about thirty years ago. Since then, the One Arm Bandit has won the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association’s Specialty Act of the Year eleven times, ranging from 1986 to 2010. He has worked such prestigious shows as the Calgary Stampede, RodeoHouston, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, and the National Finals Rodeo.

Now his children, Lynn and Amanda, criss-cross the country, each with their own rigs, entertaining at rodeos. In the summers, there are often three One Arm Bandit rigs traveling from coast to coast.

This isn’t the first time for the One Arm Bandit to perform in North Platte. He was at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo some years ago, and he is excited about returning. The colorful character says, “I’m looking forward to coming back. My show is a guarantee. If you come to the rodeo and watch the show and don’t think my show is worth the price of a ticket, and you can convince my mama, I’ll give you your money back.”

He and his wife Judy, who were married in 1975, enjoy their four grandkids.

The One Arm Bandit will be at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte June 15-18. He will entertain during each night of the rodeo. For more information on the rodeo, visit www.nebraskalanddays.com
