Dan Keister Newmyer

Dan Keister Newmyer, age 94 of Kearney, formerly of North Platte, passed away Thursday January 17, 2019 at his home that he shared with 3 other generations.  Dan was born on August 12, 1924 in Sutherland, NE to Dan and Doris Young Newmyer.  His parents ran the Hyannis Hotel and it was the Hyannis School where he spent most of his elementary years.  In 1936 the Newmyer family moved to Central City, NE and bought the Merrick Hotel where they lived and worked.  Dan graduated high school as a Central City Bison in 1942.  Dan enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as a radio gunner on a B-24 in the China-Burma-India Campaign.  After the war he attended Doane College where he received a degree and met Paula Poppe who became his wife of 67 years before Paula died in 2017.  Dan and Paula raised their children, Susan and David, in North Platte where they lived for 58 years.  Dan and Paula’s greatest joy was their 6 grandchildren.  They were North Platte Bulldog and Wilber-Clatonia Wolverine fans and spent many hours following their activities and athletic adventures.  Dan was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame as a referee for over 40 years as well as the Central City High School Hall of Fame.

Dan is survived by a son, David (Janet) Newmyer of Wilber and a daughter, Susan (Wade) Evans of Kearney; grandchildren, Randy (Ashley) Newmyer , Mark (Erika) Newmyer, and Sam Newmyer and his fiancé Mariah Morgan, Katie (Jake) McCarthy, Janie Evans, Jade Evans; great grandchildren, Oaks, Wilhelmina, and Ottilie Newmyer, Clara and Avery Newmyer, Cameron and Annie McCarthy, Cruz and Ryan Evans; his brother Kent (Rosie) Newmyer; as well as other nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dan was preceded in death by his wife, Paula; and his parents.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Lyle Anderson officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery.  Those wishing to sign the register book may do so 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Thursday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

 

Eugene Vernon Gilland

Eugene Vernon Gilland, 67, of Callaway, NE, passed away on Sunday,
January 20, 2019, at the Cozad Care Center after a short illness.

Eugene was born October 31, 1951, at Lexington, NE, to Vernon and Norma
Jean Gilland Sweet.  He was adopted by his grandparents, Claude and
Melinda Gilland, and grew up and attended school in Lexington.  He
worked various jobs then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1969.

Following his discharge in ’71 Eugene returned to Lexington then moved
around to different cities and states for work before moving back to
Lexington in 1981 where he did construction work.  In 1983 Eugene met
Rhonda Sue Harris and the two were married on June 11, 1986.  After
living in Lexington for a while they moved around to different
communities in Nebraska with his work.  They had two children and
divorced in 2015.  Eugene had been living in the Arnold community since
2001.

Eugene was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church but preferred
to study the bible at home.  He was a member of the N.R.A. and a past
member of the American Legion.  By 1994 he was no longer able to work
due to a disability so he liked spending his time fishing and gardening
but especially enjoyed being with his family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Jake Gilland and Lori (Chris) Berglund,
and brother, Randall (Becky) Gilland, all of North Platte; sister,
Sheryl Erickson, of Kearney; and other family.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents who raised him, August and
Melinda Gilland, and his birth parents, Vernon Sweet and Norma Gilland
Sweet.

Cremation was chosen.  Graveside service and inurnment will be 2 p.m.
Friday, January 25, 2019, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with
Military Honors.  The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or
at the graveside.  Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of
arrangements.

Edward Eugene Britton

Edward Eugene Britton, 66, of North Platte, died at home on January 18,
2019.

Ed was born December 5, 1952, to Clayton Edward and Eva Lucille
(Johnson) Britton in North Platte where he grew up.  He graduated from
North Platte High School in 1971 then took classes at North Platte
Community College until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1972.  Ed served
on the USS Midway stationed in the Pacific Ocean then was assigned to
the decommissioning of the USS Constellation in Bremerton, Washington.

Following his discharge in 1976 Ed returned to North Platte and hired on
with the Union Pacific Railroad where he worked as an Electrician for 28
years.  He married Mary June Schmidt on November 12, 1982 and they were
together until her death in 1995.  Ed married Helen Myers in 2003 and
they later divorced.

He was a member of The Rock Church, I.B.E.W., P.R. Halligan Post #163
American Legion and a life member of V.F.W. Post #1504.  Ed loved the
Huskers and was well read.  He will be remembered as a great brother and
proud veteran.

Along with his wife, Mary, Ed was preceded in death by his parents,
Clayton and Lucille; and sister, Hazel ‘Lisa’ Wing.

Survivors include his brothers, Charles (Joann), of Rapid City, South
Dakota and Bob (Clydene), Larry, David (Konnie) and Mike Britton, all of
North Platte; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family.

Cremation was chosen.  Memorial Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday,
January 23, 2019, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Pastor
Dennis Leitner officiating and those in attendance are asked to wear
Husker Red.  Inurnment with Military Honors will follow in Fort
McPherson National Cemetery.  The memorial book may be signed at
odeanchapel.com or from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Odean Colonial
Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of
flowers memorials are to V.F.W. Post #1504.

Duane L. Austin

Duane L. Austin, 62, of North Platte, passed away peacefully January 15, 2019 at home surrounded by his loved ones.  He was born August 2, 1956 to Roger and Patricia (Sessions) Austin at Howell, MI.  In 1989 he was united in marriage to Julie Ann McConahay.

He served in the United States Army for 9 years.  After his discharge he moved to Oklahoma and started his truck driving career, until moving to North Platte in 2007, where he was employed at Western Engineering as a heavy equipment transporter.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, camping, golfing and bowling.

He is survived by his wife, Julie of North Platte; his children, Shawnie Lovell of North Platte; son, Timothy (Valerie) Austin of Oklahoma; daughter, Jessica (Chris) Stogner of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Rylee, Hope, Lilly, Addison, Phalary and Mycal; one great grandchild, Oliver; brother, Tim (Jeannette) Austin of Utah; sisters, Dawn Cruz of Texas and Linda Fear of Oklahoma; and a brother, Patrick Austin of North Platte.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Roger “Rick” Austin.

Martin “Marty” G. Burk

Martin “Marty” G. Burk, 64, of North Platte, passed away January 15, 2019, at Ritzville, Washington.

He was born October 25, 1954, to Donald L. and Margaret J. (Diener) Burk at North Platte. He attended and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1974. He moved to North Platte in 1977 and later married the love of his life, Shannon I. Coleman, on February 23, 1979 in North Platte. He was a dedicated truck driver and had received his 1 million miles award three times. He had driven the Husker Football Equipment Truck to a number of games. He was an avid Husker sports fan. Most of all, he was proud of his grandchildren. Marty was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephews Chad Burk and Nick Larson. Marty is survived by his wife of forty years, Shannon; daughter, Tonya C. (Garrik) Pappas; son, Martin M. (Heather) Burk; sisters, Monica Burk and Mary Jo Burk; brothers, Michael Burk, Mark (Diana) Burk and Nino Burk; grandchildren, Keegan Burk Pappas, Keeli Rose Pappas, and Mickey Gene Burk; numerous other family and friends.

Ronald Gene Woodward

Ronald Gene Woodward, 73, of North Platte, died Tuesday, January 8,
2019, at Great Plains Health.

Ron was born March 4, 1945, to Harold Orlando and Vera Irene (Brown)
Woodward in North Platte where he grew up.  Ron graduated from North
Platte High School with the Class of 1963 then moved to California to
attend college.

After graduating with his Bachelor’s Degree he entered the ministry for
a short time then went back to school.  Ron eventually went to work for
several tech companies in California and Washington and worked
internationally.

He is survived by his children, Vannesa Woodward Aguilar (Rich) and
Collin Woodward, and grandchildren, Kilie and Ryan Aguilar, all of
California; brother, Leon (Lynda) Woodward, of Casa Grande, Arizona; as
well as other family.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

Cremation was chosen and inurnment will be at a later date in the North
Platte Cemetery.  The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com.

Robert Dean Barrett

Robert Dean Barrett, age 93 of North Platte, died January 15, 2019 at Linden Court. He was born June 8, 1925 to Clinton J. and Estella M. (Hill) Barrett at North Platte.  He graduated from North Platte High School.

He was united in marriage to Bennitta Marie Williams at North Platte. Robert served in the United States Army during WWII until his honorable discharge.  He owned and operated Krispy Krust Bakery.

Robert was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge, American Legion, and Eagles Lodge, member of the Hadley Barrett and Westerns Band, and past president of Nebraska Bakery Association.  Robert enjoyed his backyard gardening, his swimming pool, golfing and husker football.  He thoroughly loved his grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Constance M. Rockstool, Patricia L. Hongsermeier and Robert A. Barrett; nine grandchildren, Devan (Rudy) Roybal, Jennifer (Martin Duavin) Fitcher, Robin (Greg O’Dean) Barrett, James (Christy) Rookstool, Julie (Scott Swan) Rookstool, Jona Rookstool, Josh (Sasha Day) Rookstool, Monte Wilson, Ruy Acevedo, and Michael (Amy) Wilson; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bennittta; brothers and sisters, Wilma Loftus, Maureen Van Buren, Mildred Jones, Warren Barrett, Hadley Barrett and Clinton Barrett.

Memorial services will be 11:00 am Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Cremation was chosen.
