Barbara Lee Hopping

Barbara Lee Hopping, 85, of North Platte, passed away September 29, 2018 at Centennial Park Retirement Village.  She was born January 9, 1933 to Ned and Ellen (Eshleman) Martin at Maxwell.  Barbara graduated from Maxwell High School with the class of “50”.

On June 4, 1950, she was united in marriage to James G. Hopping.  They lived in Maxwell, where she worked as a cosmetologist and opened her home as a coffee house.  They moved to North Platte in 1978.  She was a past member of the Eagles Lodge and V.F.W.  Barbara enjoyed spending time at the lake with her family and watching family sporting events.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1986; her in laws, William and Zelma Hopping; brother, Robert Martin and niece, Julie Martin Williams.

Barbara is survived by two sons, James (Cynthia) Hopping of Damar, KS and Troy (Missy) Hopping of Sutherland; three daughters, Vicki Hopping, Nancy (Tom) Rivera both of North Platte and Jeanne (Brant) Halouska of Alliance; a brother, Michael Martin of Kansas City, MO; sisters in law, Norma Martin of Maxwell, NE, Dee Mitchell of Monroe, OR, Doris Hopping of Albion, NE; 12 grandchildren, John (Sara) McConnell, Brennen (Tabitha) Hopping, Tiffany (Traven) Foster, Bobby Halouska, Ted Halouska, Gia (Nick) Zarek, Maysa (Brenen) Hammond, Andri Halouska, Brantz Halouska, Alexa (Ben) McCall, Joli Hopping and Erica Hopping; six great grandchildren, Jack, Sofia, Riggs, Ledee, Sullivan and Hadlee; and special friend, Ginger Foust Rivera.

Willa Jean Kirts

Willa Jean Kirts, age 80 of North Platte, passed away Friday September 28, 2018 at Bryan Medical Center – East Campus in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Willa was born December 2, 1937, in North Platte, NE to Elmer G. and Regis M. Pease.  She grew up and attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School in North Platte.  She met her husband Dale Kirts at a local skating rink; they married on December 1, 1956 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  Willa was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother devoted to her family. and had a contagious personality overfilled with wit, joy, and laughter that turned strangers she met into lifelong friends.  She was active in PTA while all her children attended school, served as Little League Baseball President, and passionate community member on local, state, and national levels when she served as Executive Director for Parents in Action in Nebraska (PAN), and Standing Together Educating Parents (S.T.E.P.) for drug free youth and prevention.

Willa is survived by her children; Kim Dermer of North Platte, Pam Youngs of North Platte, Jeff (Jennifer Bosche) Kirts of Colorado Springs, CO, Steven (Julie) Kirts of Ames, IA, and Pat (Lana) Kirts of Papillion, NE; grandchildren Matthew Dermer, Jeremy Dermer, Chelsey Spady, Jacob Kirts, Tanner Kirts, Hunter Kirts, Sarah Kirts, Kyle Kirts, Connor Kirts, Spencer Kirts, Haley Kirts, and Landon Kirts; 7 great grandchildren; sister Nancy Cale of Tuscon, AZ, and her children Laurie Litton, and Tony Cale; brother Tim Pease of Tuscon, AZ; as well as other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Regis Pease; husband Dale E. Kirts; daughters Angela, Teresa, and Joanne; Uncle and Aunt Lester and Agatha Langford; cousin Ken Langford; and brother-in-law Larry Cale.

Joyce Olson

Joyce Olson, 90, of North Platte, passed away on Sunday, September 30,
2018, surrounded by her family and friends in North Platte.

Joyce was born November 26, 1927, to Austin J. and Thelma (Thornton)
Riddle on the family farm near Crawford, NE, where she grew up.  She
graduated from Crawford High School in 1945 then worked on and off for
the telephone company until retiring in 1985.

On February 6, 1954, Joyce was united in marriage to Leo W. Olson in Hot
Springs, SD, and they were together until 1981 when Leo died.  Joyce
later married Maynard E. Johnson and he passed away in 1990.

Joyce was a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be missed by all
who knew and loved her.  She is survived by her sons, Robert (Claudia)
Langston, of Lusk, WY, Lance Olson, of Hutchison, KS, and Murray Olson,
of New York City; daughter, Carol (Wayne) Shepherd, of North Platte; 10
grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; as well as many other
relatives and friends.

Besides her husbands, Joyce was preceded in death by her parents;
brother, James; son, Gary Olson; twin infant grandsons; and
granddaughter, Amanda Olson.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at Fort
McPherson National Cemetery.  The casket will be closed.  The guest book

Donna Lavette Clausen Rickett


Donna Lavette Clausen Rickett, of North Platte, passed away at the age
of 77 on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at Linden Court after a short
battle with ALS.

Donna was born April 27, 1941, in North Platte to Gaylord and Leona
Clausen.  She attended school in many places including Scottsbluff,
South Carolina and Indiana then graduated from Hershey High School in
1959.  Donna attended Mid-Plains Community College, was a licensed
Hairdresser and later worked at Country Joy.

Donna married her sweetheart, Capt. Beckley L. Rickett, in 1959 in North
Platte.  In retirement Beck and Donna loved to travel and spoil their
grandkids and great-grandkids.  Donna also enjoyed golfing, fishing,
knitting doing puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Beckley, in 2008; her mother,
father and brothers, Jerry and Steve.

Donna is survived by her sons, Scott (Sandy) Rickett, of Salda, Russia,
Craig (Jill) Rickett, of North Platte, and Max Costner, of Washington;
brother, Mike (Deb) Ziegenhagen, of California; five grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren, all of Washington; brothers-in-law, Gary
(Carolyn) Rickett, of North Platte and Jack (Pam) Rickett, of
Sutherland; and other family. She will also be missed by her special fur
baby, Kamie.

Cremation was chosen and at Donna’s request, a private graveside service
will be held in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Instead of flowers,
Donna’s wish is that you donate to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or do an
unexpected act of kindness for someone in need.  The memorial book may

Dale Phillip Nordblad

Dale Phillip Nordblad, age 63 of North Platte, passed away Tuesday September 25, 2018 at Great Plains Health.

Dale was born October 17, 1954 in Renton, WA to Irvin Gene and Sandra Dee (Soderquist) Nordblad.  He attended Renton High School and worked as a carpenter for 20 years before moving to North Platte.  He was a man with many titles: loving son, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He had many friends and will be missed by all.

Dale is survived by his mother Sandra; daughters Shannon Nordblad and Rachelle Nordblad; grandchildren Monique, Tazsanay, Jordan, Isaiah, Elijah, Katie, Kaden, Camren, Julian, JayLee; great grandchildren AnnaLee, Dylann, Jrae; and brother David (Elizabeth) Nordblad.

He was preceded in death by his father Irvin; and brother Daniel.

Lea D Heck

Lea D. Heck, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018.  She was born June 26, 1928 to Lloyd & Lora Philips of Beaver City, NE. She graduated from Beaver City High School & then married Gael N. Heck on June 1, both in 1947. They made their home in Brady, Nebraska, where they raised their 3 children, before moving to North Platte in 1995. Lea is survived by her husband, Gael; son, Bradley (June) Heck of Huntingdon, TN; daughter, Jan (Brian) Lipinski of North Platte, NE; 8 grandchildren & 13 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews & cousins. Friends are invited to visit with family at Carpenter Memorial, 1616 W. Karen Nadine Corey

Karen Nadine Corey, age 71, of North Platte, passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at Great Plains Health.

Karen was born November 2, 1946, to Marvin and Lillian (Nichols) McDonald at Richland, WA.  She grew up and attended school in Richland then married George Shields, and they later divorced.

Karen started working as a waitress when she was a teenager, first at Denny’s and later for Petosa’s Restaurant and Bar. While working at Petosa’s she met Richard Corey and the two were married on August 29, 1992, in Everett, WA, where they lived. Karen eventually began driving trucks over the road with Richard for the next several years then their job moved to North Platte in 2003.  Karen and Richard were a great couple, she loved to cook and Richard loved to eat.

Karen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2nd Ward.  When she was able, she enjoyed visiting with people in the nursing homes.

She leaves behind her husband, Richard, of North Platte; children, Linda Rosendahl, of Liberty Lake, WA, Lillian (Tim) Mathews, of Huntington, OR, and George (Amy) Shields, missionaries in the Philippines; grandchildren, Christina, Jessica, Katrina, Matthew, Sara, Jakob, Hanna, Christian, Colton and Emma; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Adrian (Denny) Ledbetter, of Kenniwick, WA; brothers, Marvin (Sandee) McDonald and Robert McDonald, of Washington; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin and Lillian McDonald, brother, Mike McDonald; and grandson, Cary ‘Dean’ Stalter.

Gladys Evelyn Nelson


Gladys Evelyn Nelson, of North Platte, passed away at the age of 99, on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the North Platte Care Center.

Gladys was born July 9, 1919, in a sod house north of North Platte, NE to John Albertus and Leora Bell Stroud Horne.  She graduated from North Platte High School in 1937.

In 1938, Gladys married Frederick Arthur “Fred” Nelson and to this union two daughters and three sons were born.  The family lived in many different communities including Kearney, NE in 1944, Oregon in 1956 and Gerber, CA in 1957.  Gladys drove a school bus for 22 years and did sewing for J.C. Penny’s, Montgomery Wards and her many friends and family.
In 1982, Gladys and Fred started traveling in their motor home, visiting most of the United States and parts of Canada.  They returned to North Platte during the summer of 1997 and bought a home.
Gladys was a member of Lodgepole Lutheran Church where she was baptized, and attended the First Baptist Church in North Platte.  She was also a member and past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Association in California and a member of the California Schools Employee’s Association.

Gladys liked being a mother and enjoyed life.  In 2000 she wrote about growing up in the Sandhills of Nebraska in her book, Sandhills Living.  The book included recipes and stories of her childhood that included good and bad times, the dry years, dust storms and grasshoppers, bootlegging, cattle rustling and more. She loved real root beer, had numerous hobbies and crafts, and never missed a Golden Games event.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Betty “B.J.” Aldrich, of Chadron; son, Stan (Roseann) Nelson, of Longwood, FL; daughters-in-law, Mary Nelson and Cathy Nelson, of Red Bluff, CA; nieces, Chrissy Muller and Geri (Art) Stroud; 16 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; and other family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Joe Gifford; sons, Larry and Ron Nelson; half sister, Matilda Sebold Twidwell; grandson, Ronnie Nelson Jr.; and her parents, John and Leora Horne.
