Owner turns over 84 cats to Lincoln animal shelter

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Officials say a Lincoln animal shelter has received 84 cats from their owner.

Matt Madcharo of the Capital Humane Society says the anonymous owner turned over some of the cats Saturday and the rest on Sunday.

Many were immunized for feline leukemia this week, and neutering and spaying got underway as well.

Some of the cats already have been adopted, but Madcharo says the shelter also could use money for food, supplies and medical care.

Authorities release name of man fatally shot in Omaha suburb

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) – Authorities have released the name of a man fatally shot in an Omaha suburb.

Bellevue police have been investigating the shooting of 23-year-old Brian Faeller-Crom as a homicide. He was found wounded at the Pheasant Ridge Apartments on Tuesday night. Police say he was pronounced dead later at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

No arrests have been reported.

Omaha child care business shuttered after man charged

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — State officials have shut down an Omaha in-home daycare business after the owner’s husband was charged with two counts of first-degree child sex assault.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says 62-year-old William Harrison is accused of molesting a child between December 2014 and December last year.

Deb’s Day Care in the Keystone neighborhood is now under an emergency order to close. Police arrest records say Harrison is accused of carrying out the assaults at the daycare.

A phone message left Wednesday at the Harrison home was not immediately returned.

Veterans greeted with handshakes and applause at new home

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Veterans moving into their new Kearney home have been greeted with handshakes and applause.

Gov. Pete Ricketts, Kearney Mayor Stan Clouse and other officials were on hand Wednesday as the veterans arrived at the new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney. They moved 34 miles west (55 kilometers) from the old facility in Grand Island.

Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings and North Platte had all competed for the project to replace the outdated, 225-bed Grand Island facility.

The new, $89 million campus has six neighborhoods of sorts, which each feature three homes that can accommodate 12 to 15 veterans in private rooms.

State dismissed from lawsuit over mental patient treatment

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The state of Nebraska and its Health and Human Services Department have been dismissed from a lawsuit that alleged the state violated rules and regulations in diagnosing and treating mentally ill patients.

A federal judge ruled last week that Dr. Farid Karimi’s claims against the state and the department are barred by sovereign immunity. Judge Laurie Smith Camp said the alleged deficiencies may have violated the patients’ constitutional rights, but they did not violate Karimi’s constitutional rights. She allowed the lawsuit to continue against three officials, however.

Karimi alleges that he reported procedural and medical violations several months after he started working at the Lincoln Regional Center in February 2016. The lawsuit says officials didn’t take any action to correct violations and instead retaliated against Karimi.

Man imprisoned for 2 Omaha robberies

Edward Sherrod

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to two Omaha robberies has been imprisoned.

U.S. District Court records say Edward Sherrod was sentenced Monday to 90 months in prison and was ordered to pay nearly $19,500 in restitution. He’d pleaded guilty to two robbery counts after prosecutors agreed to drop a third count.

The records say he used a toy gun and nylon masks to cover his face when he robbed a Baker’s supermarket on July 5, 2017, and a Mega Mart on July 24, 2017. Prosecutors say a witness got the license number of a car Sherrod used for the Mega Mart heist, and investigators traced it to a rental company. He was arrested when he returned the car to the rental office.

Deputies find missing girl they tracked through snow

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Lancaster County sheriff says deputies have found a missing 12-year-old girl they tracked through the snow on a frigid morning.

Sheriff Terry Wagner says the girl had left her home around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday after arguing with her sister. The family called for help, and two of the seven deputies dispatched found tracks that led them to the girl around 8 a.m.

Wagner says she was huddled in a ravine about a half-mile from her house, which sits about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Lincoln. She had a robe with her and was wearing snow boots.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. It was 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2.22 Celsius) at the time.

Her name wasn’t released.

Shopko files for bankruptcy protection

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin-based retail chain Shopko Stores has filed for bankruptcy protection as it makes plans to close more stores.

The company says excessive debt and ongoing competitive pressure are forcing it to seek protection from creditors. Shopko is reporting assets of less than $1 billion and liabilities of between $1 billion and $10 billion.

Shopko says it plans to continue operating through Chapter 11 reorganization after securing $480 million in financing from a group of lenders led by Wells Fargo Bank. The financing will allow Shopko to continue to pay employees, vendors and suppliers.

The retailer, headquartered near Green Bay, says it will close 38 more stores. Last month, it announced plans to close about 40 of its more than 300 stores across the country.

2 men held after 220 pounds of pot found in SUV along I-80

YORK, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two men were arrested after officers found an estimated $600,000 worth of marijuana in their sport utility vehicle along Interstate 80 in eastern Nebraska.

The York News-Times reports that a deputy pulled over the SUV for a traffic violation Tuesday night in York County. Sheriff’s Lt. Josh Gillespie says the deputy grew suspicious and asked for consent to search the vehicle. None was given, so a drug K-9 was sent to the scene. It alerted officers to the presence of drugs.

Gillespie says deputies searched the SUV and found six suitcases that held a total of around 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of pot.

York County Court records don’t show the two men traveling in the SUV have been formally charged.
