14-year-old takes plea deal in Omaha drug deal slaying

Tyon Wells

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A 14-year-old Omaha boy has taken a plea deal and will be sentenced in January for second-degree murder.

Douglas County District Court records say Tyon Wells pleaded no contest Thursday after prosecutors dropped three related counts. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 30 — a month after he turns 15.

Wells and a 15-year-old boy were arrested after two 17-year-old boys were shot Feb. 25 when Wells and his friend tried to buy marijuana. Prosecutors say 17-year-old Zachary Parker died of his wounds.

The judge cited Wells’ history of violence and familiarity with weapons in rejecting a motion to have Wells’ case moved to juvenile court.

Prosecutors didn’t charge the 15-year-old for the slaying.

3 juveniles apprehended after high-speed chase in Lincoln

Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, along with officers and deputies with the Lincoln Police Department and Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, have apprehended three juveniles following a high-speed pursuit that started in downtown Lincoln and ended near Air Park.

At approximately 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, a trooper noticed an eastbound Chevrolet Impala speeding on West O Street. The vehicle also had no license plates. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The driver entered downtown Lincoln, ran multiple red lights, and continued speeding. After making several turns in the downtown area, the vehicle travelled northbound before turning west on Superior. It then made several other turns continuing westbound toward the Air Park area. Speeds during that point of the pursuit reached as high as 100 miles per hour.

As the vehicle made several turns in the Air Park area, spike strips were successfully deployed to help bring the vehicle to a stop near 42nd Street and Rebecca Lane. The front seat passenger then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended.

The three occupants of the vehicle, between 16 and 17 years old, were all taken into custody. The driver and passenger who fled on foot were taken to the Lancaster County Youth Services Center. The third occupant was taken to his home and released to a parent. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle.

Jailed mayoral candidate gets less than 13 percent of votes

HOLDREGE, Neb. (AP) — A mayoral candidate who’s been jailed since being charged with gun crimes has lost the election in the south-central Nebraska city of Holdrege.
Thirty-year-old Joseph Melton is charged with illegally possessing a gun silencer that lacked a serial number and possessing another silencer that wasn’t registered. He’s denied both charges.

Phelps County election records say Melton garnered less than 13 percent of the votes Tuesday, losing to first-term incumbent Doug Young. Melton had remained on the ballot after being taken into custody.

Melton had said he thought that if he weren’t sitting in jail , he would have had a chance to beat Young. Melton has been a frequent and vocal critic of Young and the Holdrege City Council.

Fumes lead to evacuation of downtown Omaha skyscraper

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha’s tallest building — the First National Tower downtown — has been ordered evacuated after cleaning solution fumes spread throughout the building, sending four people to the hospital.

The evacuation was ordered Thursday morning, cutting off traffic on the streets surrounding the 633-foot (192.94-meter) tall tower where about 2,000 people work.

The newspaper said that of the four taken to hospitals, one was in critical condition and the other three in serious condition.

First National Bank spokesman Kevin Langin says workers were using a de-scaling solution on the building’s air system humidifier starting around 10 a.m., creating the fumes. Officials initially called for the first 17 floors to be evacuated, but expanded that to all floors before 11 a.m.
