Lawyer involved in killer’s case enters pleas in abuse case

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha lawyer who’d helped defend a man who killed four people has pleaded no contest in a child abuse case.

Jeremy Jorgenson will be sentenced in December. Prosecutors had charged the 44-year-old with felony child abuse and witness tampering. Those charges were reduced in exchange for his pleas.

Prosecutors say the 7-year-old son of Jorgenson’s wife threw a toy at Jorgenson on Feb. 19, who then chased him, picked him up by his shirt collar and dropped him. One of the boy’s wrists was broken.

Jorgenson was part of the defense team for Anthony Garcia, who was convicted of killing four Omaha residents. Prosecutors say Garcia was seeking revenge for his firing from a Creighton University medical school program. Jorgenson handled much of the questioning of DNA experts in the Garcia case.

Reprieve that kept juvenile sex offenders off list ends

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A federal judge has lifted a temporary order that kept juvenile sex offenders off the Nebraska sex offender registry if they weren’t tried as adults.

Judge Richard Kopf denied a request Monday from an Omaha man for an injunction that would have kept him off the list. He’d been convicted as a juvenile in Iowa for sexual abuse when he was 14 but was required to register there as a sex offender. A federal court had said people convicted in juvenile courts in other states don’t have to register in Nebraska if they move here.

The temporary reprieve Kopf granted last month , pending a hearing, affected the man and dozens of other people. The State Patrol sent letters to them in September telling them they now were required to register as sex offenders because of a recent Nebraska Supreme Court decision.

The high court ruled that the Nebraska law says the registry requirement applies to anyone who, after Jan. 1, 1997, enters the state and is required to register elsewhere as a sex offender.

Train vs semi accident injures Wallace man

A semi vs train accident forced the closure of Highway 23 for most of Monday night.

On October 22, 2018 Deputies were called to mile marker 50 (just east of Wallace, NE) on State Highway 23 for an injury accident. It was reported a semi-tractor trailer struck a train. Deputies arrived on the scene and found a semi, driven by 48-year-old Daniel Rollenhagen of Wallace, was westbound on Highway 23.

Deputies say Rollenhagen approached the railroad crossing and observed a train sitting on the tracks, completely blocking the roadway. He attempted to stop but could not avoid the collision with the train. This particular crossing does not have flashing lights or crossing arms.

At least two empty grain cars were pushed off the tracks and blocked the Highway for most of the night. The Nebraska Department of Roads responded to assist until the damaged cars could be removed. Mr. Rollenhagen was wearing his seatbelt but suffered what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries; he was transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte, NE. Drugs and alcohol were not suspected to be the cause of the accident. The investigation continues.
