Dispute over Nebraska governor debates flares up once again

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Bob Krist says he is making one final push for another debate with Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, a request the governor’s re-election campaign calls a publicity stunt.

Krist asked Ricketts in a press release Thursday to call him directly, without intervention from campaign attorneys or staff. Krist is seeking a debate sponsored by Omaha television station KETV, possibly in partnership with Nebraska Educational Telecommunications and C-SPAN.

Ricketts and Krist debated each other once before at the Nebraska State Fair in August. Discussions over other debates fell apart amid disagreements over who should sponsor and broadcast them.

Krist says voters deserve a fair and open discussion.

Ricketts campaign spokesman Matthew Trail says it’s a publicity stunt because Krist made the request in a press release.

Trial set for man accused of killing of Lincoln woman

Aubrey Trail
WILBER, Neb. (AP) — Trial has been set for next year for a man charged in the death and dismemberment of a Lincoln woman.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that 52-year-old Aubrey Trail was in a Saline County courtroom Thursday, where a judge set his first-degree murder trial for June. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Trail.

He is accused of strangling 24-year-old Sydney Loofe in November. Prosecutors say Trail and an accused accomplice, 24-year-old Bailey Boswell, then dismembered Loofe’s body, stuffed her remains in trash bags and dump the remains in rural Clay County.

Boswell also faces a first-degree murder charge and a possible death sentence.

Loofe was reported missing a day after she went on a date with Boswell. Her remains were found Dec. 4.

Nebraska State Patrol investigating woman’s death in jail

OSHKOSH, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says it’s investigating the death of a woman being held in western Nebraska’s Garden County Jail.

The patrol says it was notified around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday that 37-year-old Candy Flood, of Sidney, had died at the jail in Oshkosh. Flood was being housed in the jail for Cheyenne County after being arrested Saturday on suspicion of disturbing the peace. That charge was filed against Flood by the Cheyenne County Attorney around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Within 1.5 hours, a motion to dismiss the charge was filed, citing Flood’s death.

In a news release Wednesday, the patrol said preliminary information indicates a medical issue may have led to Flood’s death.

State law requires a grand jury investigation of all in-custody deaths.

Nebraska girl killed, 6 others injured in Missouri crash

BOLIVAR, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say an 11-year-old girl was killed and two of her brothers were seriously injured when a car carrying seven family members from Nebraska overturned in Missouri.

The one-car accident occurred early Tuesday on Missouri 13 in Bolivar. The Lincoln Journal-Star reports the family’s youngest child, 11-year-old Eliza Bakirane, died at the scene.

Bolivar police say the car, driven by 40-year-old Maria Borland of Lincoln, Nebraska, went off the side of the road, over-corrected and lost traction on dirt and gravel due to construction. The vehicle then overturned several times before coming to rest on its wheels.

Borland’s two sons were thrown from the vehicle and were eventually flown to a hospital in St. Louis. The others in the vehicle were taken to a Springfield hospital.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) – Authorities say two people have died after a collision in south-central Nebraska’s Adams County.

The accident occurred around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, south of Hastings. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office says a westbound vehicle driven by 18-year-old Parker Short collided at an intersection with a northbound vehicle driven by 20-year-old Isaiah Zapata. They and one of Zapata’s passengers were hospitalized.

The sheriff’s office says two other passengers in Zapata’s vehicle died at a Grand Island hospital: Jessica Guerrero, of Lexington, and Jose Martinez, of Grand Island. Both were 19 years old.

The collision is being investigated. The sheriff’s office says witnesses report that Short ran a stop sign.

U of Nebraska at Kearney officers now carrying handguns

Campus police officers have begun carrying handguns at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, 44 years after college officials decided to disarm them.

University spokeswoman Kelly Bartling told the Kearney Hub the change was made to align university police with the policies, procedures, standards and equipment of its peer agencies.

She also said students and the campus community “will be safer with armed officers.”

University Police Chief Jim Davis says his officer candidates must complete 16 weeks of basic training at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island, which is the same training completed by city and county officers.

The university officers are paired with field training officers after graduating from the Grand Island academy so they can learn collegiate law enforcement.
