William “Billy” Duane Bryant
William “Billy” Duane Bryant, 62, was taken to his heavenly home in the early morning of March 7, 2018, after a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. At the time of his passing, Billy was surrounded by his family and loved ones. Billy relied on his deep faith, love for Jesus and family during this difficult time.
William “Billy” Duane Bryant, son of Bill and Norma Lea (Cole) Bryant, was born in McCook on Sept. 14, 1955.
On Oct. 22, 1988, he was united in marriage to Kris Annette Bowers in Curtis. To this union a daughter and two sons were born, Lacy Marie Bryant, Clint Hazen Bryant and Lane Scott Bryant.
Billy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend and role model to so many. He spent his life doing what he thoroughly enjoyed and had many talents and passions. Billy had a passion for his alfalfa fields, and that was admittedly his favorite aspect of the farm. He worked side by side with his father, Bill, from the day he graduated high school to his death. His own definition of his profession was “Farmer, Horseshoer, Welder, Hay-hauler, Grandpa-type guy.”
His children and grandchildren will remember him for his compassion, love, patience, kindness and loyalty. If there was an activity that they were involved in, he was there. Billy was heavily involved in the community and volunteer activities. Those included Little League baseball, Sunday school teacher, zoning board, Frontier County Fire Department, Frontier County Fair Board, Frontier County livestock superintendent, Curtis Roping Club, State Fair Farrier, Curtis Easter Pageant, Frontier County 4-H and many more activities. He will be deeply missed by so many people.
He was preceded in death by his son, Lane Scott Bryant; grandparents, Hazen and Bessie (Gilliland) Cole, Gayle and Clara (Smith) Bryant, Art and Flo Rigby; and father-in-law, Jack Bowers.
He is survived by his wife, Kris of Curtis; daughter, Lacy (Cody) Most of Curtis; son, Clint (Danae) of McCook; grandchildren, Kaison, Hadley, Emery and Keilea Most of Curtis, and Avery, Allie and Ava Bryant of McCook; father, Bill Bryant, and mother, Norma Bryant of Curtis; sister, Jody Bryant (Robert) Rupp of Grand Island; mother-in-law, Sharon (Gentz) Bowers of Curtis; sister-in-law, Kim Bowers (Allan) Mortensen of Curtis; nephews and nieces, Christoper (Michelle) Rupp of Norfolk, Kyle (Mallory) Rupp of Omaha, Kaycie Rupp of Chicago, Quenton (Tonya) Mortensen of Curtis, Elizabeth Mortensen of Broken Bow and Dillon (Beccah) Mortensen of Curtis.
Memorials are suggested to the Bryant Memorial Scholarship, which will be established through the Medicine Valley Foundation. Online condolences may be shared at blasestrauser.com.
Services will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, at Medicine Valley Public Schools, 303 Crook Ave., Curtis. Burial will follow at the Curtis Cemetery. Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel & Monuments, Gothenburg, is in charge of arrangements.
Ex-trooper pleads not guilty in chase death; trial start set
RUSHVILLE, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska state trooper has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor vehicular homicide and other charges for his part in a pursuit that led to a deadly crash.
Sheridan County Court records say 42-year-old Tim Flick entered the pleas Thursday. His trial is scheduled to begin June 4 in Rushville.
The charges stem from Flick’s role in the 2016 chase of an intoxicated motorist in Sheridan County.
Dashcam video features Flick saying he used a tactical vehicle intervention, a move that’s meant to bump a fleeing vehicle in order to get it to safely spin out. The vehicle crashed into a ditch and rolled, killing the driver, 32-year-old Antoine LaDeaux.
Court records say State Patrol officials later changed the story and said Flick’s car was struck by the fleeing vehicle.
2 men plead guilty in 7 Lincoln bank robberies
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two of the five people charged in connection with several Lincoln bank robberies have changed their pleas to guilty.
Israel Holmes entered his plea Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Lincoln. Julian Huffman entered his plea last week.
The three other suspects are scheduled to enter pleas in the coming weeks.
Court records say seven banks were robbed for a total of more than $49,000 from May through October. Prosecutors say pepper spray was used on bank employees in at least two of the robberies and the robbers also used realistic-looking BB guns to menace the employees.
Police release names of officer, driver involved in shooting
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of an Omaha officer and a driver who were injured during a struggle in which a shot was fired.
Officers stopped a car Thursday afternoon on U.S. Highway 75 in northeast Omaha. Police say an officer struggled with the driver and the gunshot rang out. Police have not said whether the driver, the officer or someone else fired the shot.
Police say the driver fled in the car and soon crashed. He was taken to a Nebraska Medical Center.
Police said in a news release Thursday that he’s been identified as 21-year-old Micah Taylor, who suffered a minor gunshot wound to his neck area. The officer’s been identified as 49-year-old David Staskiewicz, who was treated for a minor injury not caused by a gunshot.
Suspect arrested in fatal shooting outside Omaha store
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A suspect has been arrested in the slaying of a man outside an Omaha convenience store.
Omaha police say 29-year-old Forrest Cox III was arrested Thursday. Court records say he’s charged with first-degree murder and two weapons counts. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for him. He’s being held in Douglas County Jail.
Cox is accused of shooting 25-year-old Laron Rogers on March 6 last year. Police say Rogers died 16 days later.
Judge dissuades robber from seeking prison for medical help
BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man who robbed a bank with the goal of receiving medical treatment in prison has been asked by a judge to consider probation instead.
Terry L. Bailes, 54, appeared in Gage County District Court on Wednesday to be sentenced for attempted robbery. He had pleaded no contest in the case.
Bailes developed a hand condition that prevents him from doing simple tasks, court records said. Because of the condition, he lost his job at Landoll Corporation and eventually lost his home, Bailes said.
Bailes asked a teller to call authorities when he demanded money from a Great Western Bank in October, court records said. He didn’t have a weapon and left the bank with $10. He then purchased cigarettes and waited for authorities to arrive.
Bailes said he has no family, and that going to prison might be the only way he could get medical attention.
“I felt as though my back was against the wall,” Bailes said. “I know it was a poor judgment. This way, I think I can get medical care.”
Bailes has other theft convictions in his criminal history, the most recent from 2005, said Judge Rick Schreiner.
Schreiner delayed the sentencing Wednesday and encouraged Bailes to consider probation. He also suggested Bailes to reach out to a friend who could support him. The judge said he doesn’t “believe prison is for the poor and homeless.”
“There may be some people who disagree with me,” Schreiner said. “You committed a bank robbery. I know that and people may say ‘That judge is soft, all bank robbers should go to prison.’ Those people haven’t read your presentence investigation and those people aren’t the ones tasked with this obligation.”
About 300 Cabela’s headquarters employees taking buyouts
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — About 300 employees at Cabela’s former headquarters in western Nebraska are taking buyouts this week, and afterward, the remaining operation in Sidney will be a fraction of the size it was before rival Bass Pro Shops bought the company.
Another 390 former Cabela’s employees also applied for buyouts, but no immediate action will be taken on those. Bass Pro spokesman Jack Wlezian says that after the cuts about 500 employees will remain in Sidney.
Cabela’s once employed more than 2,000 people at its sprawling Sidney headquarters. Bass Pro plans to offer the 550,000-square-feet of office space for $1 a year to other companies that want to move to the town of roughly 7,000 people.
Springfield, Missouri-based Bass Pro bought Cabela’s in a $5 billion deal last year.
Iowa woman gets probation for role in Nebraska shooting

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A western Iowa woman has been sentenced in Nebraska to five years’ probation for being an accessory to a 2016 road-rage shooting death.
19-year-old Page Green, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced Wednesday. She had pleaded no contest to being an accessory to a homicide in the shooting death of 32-year-old Cristian Pastrana-Marin.
Last year, 21-year-old Darwin Johnson of Omaha was sentenced to up to 60 years in prison for the fatal shooting.
Police say Pastrana-Marin and Green got into a dispute in which Pastrana-Marin honked at her after one car cut off the other on U.S. Highway 75 near downtown Omaha. At a red light, Johnson got out of Green’s vehicle and fired seven times at Pastrana-Marin, hitting him once in the head.
