Scottsbluff man accused of mailing opioid patches to inmate

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — A Scottsbluff man has been charged with three felonies after investigators say he mailed opioid patches to a woman jailed in Wyoming.

51-year-old Douglas Boyce has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and two counts of delivery of a controlled substance.

Authorities say in a Feb. 2 arrest affidavit that Goshen County, Wyoming, jail staffers twice intercepted fentanyl patches mailed to the woman. Authorities say they also monitored phone calls between Boyce and the woman, during which she advised the man how to send the patches and discussed where Boyce was storing them.

Police say a search Tuesday of Boyce’s home in Scottsbluff turned up two boxes of the patches.

Boyce remains jailed at Scotts Bluff County Detention Center on $50,000 bond.

Nebraska State Patrol says Minden resident killed in crash

UPLAND, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says a Minden resident has died in a two-vehicle crash on Nebraska Highway 10 near Upland in south-central Nebraska.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon, and the drivers of both vehicles were taken to a Minden hospital. The patrol says 82-year-old Delna Wempen died at the hospital.

The Franklin Fire Department and Kearney County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash scene. The Nebraska State Patrol has taken over the investigation into the crash.

Lincoln woman pleads not guilty in vehicle death of aunt

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 22-year-old Lincoln woman accused of causing her aunt’s death by swerving to throw her off a vehicle has pleaded not guilty to motor-vehicle homicide.

Kacie Alatoree filed a written plea before her set arraignment on Wednesday.

Alatoree faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

Police say 36-year-old Autumn Rodriguez Hernandez died Nov. 12, days after she climbed onto the SUV Alatoree was driving. Police say Alatoree accelerated and swerved left and right to shake Rodriguez Hernandez off the vehicle, causing the older woman to fall and hit her head on a curb. Police say Alatoree then fled the scene.

Police say Rodriguez Hernandez had loaned the SUV to her niece three months earlier and was trying to get it back when she climbed onto it.

Mildred (Mac) Jean Welsh, age 89, of North Platte, born April 18, 1928, departed this earth on February 3rd, 2018 at Pioneer Memorial in Mullen with God’s grace and peace.

Mac was preceded in death by her parents, 8 siblings and her son, Stephen. Mac is survived by her best friend and husband, George, Sr. of Mullen; her children, George (Sandy) Jr., of Cozad, Betty (Chuck) Wretling of Littleton, CO, Peggy (Brad) Porath of Mullen, and Patricia (Alan) Kackmeister of Austin, TX; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Betty Halsey and Alice Bailey; cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

Martha Ann Burbach, age 93 of North Platte, passed away Tuesday February 6, 2018 at Centennial Park Nursing Home with her family by her side.

Martha was born March 14, 1924 in Crofton, NE to Bernard and Mary (Ausdemore) Langferman. She grew up in Crofton and graduated from Crofton High School in 1940. She attended Wayne State Teacher’s College and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Cedar County for 4 years. She married Reinhold “Reiny” H. Burbach on July 9, 1945 in Constance, NE. They lived in Hartington, NE until they moved to North Platte in 1961. She belonged to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Daughter of Charities, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, St. Ann’s Rosary group, and she volunteered at McDaid School for 20 plus years. She was a past member of the Lake Maloney golf club and belonged to many bridge clubs. In her free time she enjoyed crocheting, and made afghans for her children and grandchildren. Before retiring, both she and Reiny traveled to over 15 countries, most all the United States, and occasionally stopped at a casino or two! She was a person who could become friends with anyone and always kept people entertained with stories and jokes. Martha had a great sense of humor. She was a role model for many and was loved and admired by all, especially her family.

Martha is survived by her husband Reiny of North Platte; daughters Barbara Waldschmidt of Omaha, Rosemary (Ron) Jones of North Platte, Karlene (Dave) Hoedel of Walled Lake, MI; sons Bill (Suzanne) of Belmont, NH, Randy (Denise) of North Platte, Kevin (Denise) of North Platte; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; as well as other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Mary Langferman; sisters Helen Potts and Johanna Langferman; brothers Henry, George, Wendel, Joe, Frank, Albert, Erwin and Ray Langferman; and son-in-law James Waldschmidt.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Building Fund or the North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Trust. Online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com. Burial will follow at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the local homes of Martha’s children. Visitation will be from noon until 6:00 p.m. Saturday and from noon until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Beverly Ann Hoaglund

Beverly Ann Hoaglund, 87, formerly of Brady passed away February 5, 2018 at Linden Court. Beverly was born on April 6, 1930 in Gothenburg, NE to Edward and Thelma (Rose) Coon. She attended and graduated from Brady Public Schools. She attended the University of Nebraska Omaha where she received her RN degree. On April 25, 1954 Beverly married her high school sweetheart, Richard “Eugene” Hoaglund.

Beverly was a member of the Brady United Methodist Church, serving as church secretary, UMW board, and the election board. She helped with the census, loved to craft, sew, crochet, garden, and can, and enjoyed attending sporting events of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her son Richard (Linda) Hoaglund of Brady; grandkids, Corey, Casey (Becky) Hoaglund, Jessica (Tim) Johnson, Jeanie (Alex) Roeder, Jennifer (fiancé, Jack Brethauer) Hoaglund; great-grandkids, Haylie, Chloe, Jacob, Ethan, Chase, Bailey, Joseph, Aliyah, Jake, Isaac, and Kirsten; son, Jeff (Sally Jo) Hoaglund of North Platte; grandkids, Kim (Brian) Flanders, Jason (Nancy) Ross, Kerri (Clint) Walther, Lindsay (Aaron) Niles; great-grandkids, Karli, Jaeli, Emma, Jordan (Evan), Brodey, Akilah (fiancé, Justin), Kaden, Gavin, and Riley; son, Pat (Julie) Hoaglund of Brady; grandkids, Kelli (Matt) Wiiest, and Tiffany Hoaglund; and great-grandchild, Blakely.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Eugene Hoaglund; brother, James Coon; and a nephew, Mike Coon.

Nebraska prairie dog bill could come up again this year

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An attempt to overturn Nebraska’s prairie dog management law could surface again in this year’s legislative session after an earlier effort failed.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha designated the repeal bill as his priority on Wednesday, increasing the odds it will get debated again.

Chambers is trying to undo a law that allows county officials to kill black-tailed prairie dogs on private property if a neighbor complains. Senators voted 21-17 in favor of the bill last month, four votes short of what was needed to advance it.

Chambers says the law doesn’t provide adequate due-process rights to landowners who don’t mind the animals on their property because it lets county officials venture onto land without a warrant or property notification.

Police say father’s girlfriend twisted 5-year-old’s genitals

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Bellevue woman has been charged with child abuse after police say she twisted the genitals of her boyfriend’s 5-year-old son after the boy wet the bed.

Bail was set Wednesday at $30,000 for 48-year-old Hollie Budka, who is charged with felony child abuse in Douglas County. Police say they were called after the boy’s mother noticed marks and bruising on his neck and genitals following the boy’s visit to his father’s house on Jan. 28.

The boy told investigators that Budka twisted his genitals and beat him with a belt after he had wet the bed.

No attorney is listed for Budka in online court documents, and Budka could not be reached for comment Wednesday..

Hall earns NPPS Staff Member of the Month Award

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation in conjunction with North Platte Public Schools is excited to announce that Dale Hall is being honored as the NPPS Big Award Staff member of the month for February.

Hall is a physical education teacher at Adams Middle School. He also is the head wrestling coach and assistant girls and boy’s tennis coach. He has been with the North Platte Public School district since 2009. He has a passion for coaching and displays exemplary leadership skills.

“Dale’s reputation for building positive relationships and being a successful coach is well recognized by his colleagues. Dale is someone that wants to do what is best for his athletes on and off the mat!” says Dan Helberg and Marc Mroczek.

In conjunction with his duties at the schools, Hall is involved in the community. He was a participant in the 2017 Dancing with the Stars fundraiser and he is active with the youth wrestling program.

The North Platte Public Schools and North Platte Public Schools foundation developed the BIG Staff recognition promotion to provide incentives for deserving teachers and support staff. The program is designed to recognize outstanding teachers and support staff for their contributions to NPPS. The nomination symbolizes the esteem and appreciation that everyone has for our school district employees.

Teachers are rewarded with a gift basket, balloons and a gift card to the Bulldog store at NPHS. The North Platte Public Schools Foundation is facilitating the program and takes nominations from principals and administration. Staff members are awarded monthly throughout the school year and will be recognized at the end of the year Education After Hours in the spring.
