Feds indict man accused of stealing more than $1.1M at work

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Federal authorities have indicted a Crete man already charged with stealing more than $1.1 million from his former employer in Lincoln.

The wire fraud indictment announced Thursday involves Mark Ackerman, who was office manager for Vertical Horizons Contracting Inc. in Lincoln. Federal prosecutors say Ackerman used accounts designated for reimbursement fees to transfer funds to his personal account for items never purchased. It also alleges that he falsely represented legitimate business expenses and made checks payable to himself from company accounts.

A document filed in his state theft case says Ackerman went to Lincoln police on Oct. 15 and confessed to diverting the money from company accounts. His next state hearing is scheduled for Feb. 16. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call Friday from The Associated Press.

Woman accused of having sex with teen boy staying at shelter

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a woman who worked for the Child Saving Institute in Omaha has been accused of having sex with a teenage boy who was staying at the institute’s shelter.

Douglas County prosecutor Brenda Beadle says 23-year-old Hanna Dickerson will be charged Friday with sexual abuse of a dependent. It’s unclear whether Dickerson has an attorney. She lives in Neola, Iowa.

The boy is a ward of the state who turned 17 in July. He said in an August interview that he and Dickerson engaged in sex several times in July and August.

An institute spokeswoman has declined to describe Dickerson’s job duties. Dickerson’s no longer employed there.

Sister accused of having sister impersonate her for license

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have accused a Lincoln woman of having her sister impersonate her and take the driver’s license test so the woman could get a Nebraska license.

Court records say 28-year-old Niketa Williams and 35-year-old Angela Myles are charged with illegally possessing a vital record. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for either or both of them. Their next court date is Feb. 6.

Investigators say facial recognition software identified the similarity between the image of the applicant, Myles, and images on record for Williams. Interviews with the women led officials to suspect Williams had impersonated Myles in November and that Myles had given Williams her birth certificate to get the license.

SARGENT, Neb. (AP) — A man is scheduled for sentencing in March for the crash death of his car passenger on Thanksgiving Day 2016.

New University of Nebraska policy emphasizes free expression

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — University of Nebraska regents will consider a policy to make its campuses more conducive to the free exchange of ideas following a political incident last year.

The Board of Regents will consider the new policy next week. The proposal reaffirms the university’s commitment to the First Amendment rights of speech and expression and calls for regular opportunities to teach about the First Amendment. It will also require NU campuses to designate spaces as public forums, limited public forums or non-public forums.

“Although members of the university community are free to comment on, criticize and contest views that others express, they must do so at a time and place, and in a manner that does not prevent, impede, or obstruct the freedom of others to also exercise their rights,” the policy said.

The university gained national attention in August when a graduate student lecturer confronted a conservative student. Courtney Lawton made an inappropriate hand gesture at second-year student Kaitlyn Mullen, who was recruiting for the conservative group Turning Point USA. Lawton also called Mullen a “neo-fascist.” Lawton, who was initially relieved of her classroom duties, was later fired after pressure from at least three state senators.

Conservative lawmakers accused the university of being unwelcoming to conservative viewpoints. Faculty members said the discipline against Lawton went against the university’s principles of academic freedom.

Shortly after the incident, a group of six administrators began crafting the policy with regents, faculty, staff and students.

“At a time when we’re part of a national conversation about these issues, it’s important for us to re-examine and recommit ourselves to the principles that any institution of higher learning must hold dear,” said regent Bob Whitehouse of Omaha.

Nebraska notifies 2nd death-row inmate of drugs to be used

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s corrections department has notified a second death-row inmate of the drugs it intends to use for his execution.

The Department of Correctional Services sent the letter Friday to Carey Dean Moore, who has been on death row since 1980 for fatally shooting two Omaha taxicab drivers.

No execution date has been scheduled, and the department currently faces a lawsuit challenging its efforts to proceed with one.

The department says it plans to execute Moore with diazepam, fentanyl citrate, cisatracurium besylate and potassium chloride.

Nebraska officials provided the same notice on Nov. 9 to death-row inmate Jose Sandoval, who was convicted for his role in a 2002 Norfolk bank robbery and shooting. No execution date has been set in that case.
