Nebraska Click It or Ticket campaign to run Thanksgiving week

As travelers hit the road for Thanksgiving, Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) will participate in a national campaign to promote seatbelt usage. The Click It or Ticket enforcement will run from Monday, November 20 through Sunday, November 26.

NSP’s Click It or Ticket campaign runs in conjunction with many local law enforcement agencies throughout Nebraska, the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office (NDOT-HSO), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NSP’s participating is thanks in part to a grant for $18,000 from the NDOT-HSO.

“Thanksgiving week is a busy time for our roads in Nebraska,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “We’ve seen record numbers of Nebraska motorists using seatbelts already this year. We urge all drivers and passengers to buckle-up and practice safe driving for their Thanksgiving travels.”

In 2017, 76% of the people killed in car crashes in Nebraska were not wearing seatbelts. Seatbelt usage is the most effective method of reducing fatalities and serious injuries in the event of a crash.

Death penalty hearing for Anthony Garcia pushed to March

Anthony Garcia

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A death penalty sentencing hearing has again been delayed for a former doctor convicted of killing four people connected to an Omaha medical school.

A three-judge panel had been set to hold the hearing in the case of Anthony Garcia at the end of this month. On Thursday, a judge pushed the two-day hearing back to March 12 at the request of defense attorneys, who say they need more time to prepare.

The three-judge panel will determine whether Garcia is sentenced to death or to life in prison. He was convicted last year of killing the 11-year-old son and a housekeeper of Creighton University faculty member William Hunter in 2008, and killing pathology doctor Roger Brumback and his wife in 2013.

Prosecutors say Garcia blamed Hunter and Brumback for his 2001 firing from Creighton’s pathology residency program.

Police say man dies after early morning crash in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say an Omaha man has died following a two-vehicle crash at a southwestern city intersection.

Police say 60-year-old Jose Gil-Rodriguez died from injuries he received in the 5 a.m. Thursday crash.

Investigators say a 34-year-old driver ran a red light at the intersection, colliding with Gil-Rodriguez’s car. The older man was taken to an Omaha hospital, where he died.

The other driver was treated for cuts and scrapes.

No charges had been filed by early Friday.

Fired Nebraska trooper faces new federal drug charges

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former Nebraska State Patrol investigator charged earlier this year with stealing ammunition from the patrol’s facility in Omaha now faces federal charges, accused of stealing narcotics while on the job.

The Omaha World-Herald says 44-year-old Christopher Kober, of Bellevue, was fired in June following an internal investigation and after being charged by state prosecutors in May with theft for the missing ammunition.

Kober’s attorney, Clarence Mock, had said at the time that it was the regular practice of troopers to take ammunition for shooting practice.

The recent federal indictment charges Kober with acquiring drugs by fraud or diversion in 2016 and 2017, and intending to distribute those drugs. The indictment lists the drugs as painkillers and opioids stolen during drug take-back operations, overdose investigations and other means.

Mock says Kober will plead not guilty to the federal charges.

Nebraska unemployment for October lowest since 1999

workLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Labor Department says the state’s preliminary unemployment rate dropped slightly in October to 2.7 percent, reaching a low that hasn’t been seen since 1999.

The department said in a report released Friday that the figure was one-tenth of a percentage point lower than the September rate of 2.8 percent.

The report says the October rate was six-tenths of a point under the year-ago rate of 3.3 percent. The October rate also remained well below the U.S. rate, which dipped slightly to 4.1 percent for the month.

The report says Nebraska nonfarm employment in October was up 10,379 over the year and up 1,624 over the month.
