Oregon man arrested in Nebraska for alleged pot trafficking

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon marijuana processor was arrested Thursday in Nebraska on drug trafficking allegations after deputies reported discovering about $1.1 million in cannabis extract in his U-Haul van during a traffic stop.

Oregon Liquor Control Commission spokesman Mark Pettinger said this was the first known case of a licensed Oregon marijuana supplier arrested for allegedly trafficking in another state.

38-year-old Richard Wilkinson of Damascus, Oregon, was stopped in Lincoln, Nebraska, for following another vehicle too closely.

Deputies searched the van when they smelled marijuana and discovered 25 pounds of the extract, sealed packages of marijuana, vials of hash oil and 3,500 marijuana seeds.

Deputies believe Wilkinson was heading to a state where medical marijuana is legal, Sheriff Terry Wagner said, but it’s still illegal in Nebraska.

Woman accused of fleeing scene after aunt fell from SUV

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln woman is accused of fleeing the scene after her aunt fell from a sport utility vehicle the woman was driving.

Court records say Kacie Alatoree is charged with failing to stop and render aid and remained in custody Friday. Her attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.

A Lincoln officer says in a court affidavit that Alatoree had borrowed the SUV from the boyfriend of her aunt, 36-year-old Autumn Rodriguez Hernandez but had refused to return it. Rodriguez Hernandez spotted the vehicle and Alatoree on Tuesday and climbed on it after Alatoree refused to surrender the keys. The officer says Rodriguez Hernandez fell off and struck her head after Alatoree accelerated and swerved.

A hospital spokeswoman says Rodriguez Hernandez remained in critical condition Friday.

Animal rights groups demand action against Iowa fur farm

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal inspectors have repeatedly ordered a southeast Iowa fur farm to improve the living conditions for ferrets, foxes, raccoons and skunks it sells to government laboratories and pet stores.

U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection reports say animals lived in sweltering heat or maggot-infested filth, sometimes with decomposing corpses in their cages at Ruby Fur Farm, located 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Des Moines.

Owner Randy Ruby declined to discuss the reports. But a spokeswoman at an animal business advocacy group says some of the inspectors’ claims were exaggerated and when there were problems Ruby addressed them.

No enforcement action has been taken, but animal rights groups want the farm’s animal dealer license revoked and animals removed.

A USDA spokesman has declined to say whether enforcement action is under consideration.

Omaha gets $200K for veterans memorial replica

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The city of Omaha has received a $200,000 private donation to create a new replica of a monument honoring Korean and Vietnam War veterans.

The Korea Vietnam Peace Memorial was installed in 1976 and was restored 20 years ago. The monument featuring a soldier and child has already been removed from Memorial Park.

The city announced the donation Wednesday during the Veterans Shine On lighting ceremony at the park.

Jensen Conservation Service is building the identical replica. Advocates are hoping the work gets done in time for the 70th anniversary of the park’s dedication next year.

Mayor Jean Stothert says the memorial is a “symbol of military service and sacrifice.”

California man faces marijuana charge in Nebraska

LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) — A Northern California man has been arrested in south-central Nebraska and charged with possession of marijuana for sale.

60-year-old Curtis Dixon, of Redding, California, was taken into custody Wednesday night about a mile (1.6 kilometers) east of the Cozad interchange on Interstate 80. Online jail records say he remained in Dawson County custody Friday. Court records don’t list the name of attorney who could comment for Dixon.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20.

The Nebraska State Patrol says a trooper pulled over Dixon’s eastbound pickup truck and soon smelled marijuana. A search of the vehicle turned up 48 pounds (21.8 kilograms) of pot. Most of it was in five large trash bags under a sheet of plywood in the truck bed.

North Platte – A North Platte Community College softball player will represent her home country on the international stage Nov. 11 – 16 in Santa Marta, Colombia.

NPCC Knight Sophomore softball player Alejandra Vivar, from Lima, Peru will compete on the Peruvian national team in the Bolivarian Games.

According to the official website, Bolivarian Games have 11 countries participating in 34 sports. In the softball competition, there are five teams competing: Peru, Bolivia, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela.

“This is a tournament that is going to help teams qualify for the Pan-American games in 2019,” Vivar said. “We don’t need to qualify since we are hosting the Pan-American games.”

Vivar said that these games are going to help us realize the level of competition we will face in 2019.

“I am really excited to be able to play for my country,” Vivar said. “Even though softball is not our strongest sport, it is such a big honor to represent my country since not everyone has that opportunity. We have been working really hard to improve the softball in Peru, and I think every day we can tell the difference. Our federation is giving us the opportunity to travel and see the softball level out of the country, and those are experiences worth taking advantage of.”

Vivar said that four years ago, when practicing for the 2013 Bolivarian Games, they didn’t have a field to practice on. This year they have their own softball field and have players studying and playing ball in the U.S. She said perseverance has been reflected from everyone behind the project, and working together has made them move forward.

My grades and my hard work here has shown that I am able to represent my country,” Vivar said.

Peru will open up on Nov. 12 against Panama.
