Iowa man sentenced for dealing fentanyl that led to death

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute a powerful painkiller that led to the 2015 death of a Council Bluffs man.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Charles Jesse Beuterbaugh, of Carter Lake, was sentenced Tuesday in Council Bluffs’ federal court.

Prosecutors say Beuterbaugh was part of a drug-trafficking organization that sold fentanyl in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

The investigation into the group began in June 2015, when police were called to Beuterbaugh’s Carter Lake home and found the body of 20-year-old Diego Lemus. Police learned a second man had been taken to a local hospital for a fentanyl overdose.

Three of Beuterbaugh’s co-defendants were earlier sentenced to terms ranging from 10 to nearly 14 years. Two others await sentencing.

OSHA cites Nebraska bakery for suspected safety violations

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — An eastern Nebraska commercial bakery has been cited by a federal workplace safety agency, accused of exposing workers to multiple hazards.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said in a news release Wednesday that Bimbo Bakeries USA, of Bellevue, faces $122,625 in proposed penalties.

Investigators cited the bakery for three repeat and three serious violations, including lack of machine guarding, failing to provide fall protection, and using a damaged electrical panel box.

OSHA says it has cited the company twice before for similar hazards.

A message left Wednesday for Bimbo’s plant manager seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The company has 15 business days to comply, request an informal conference or contest the findings.

Report: Nebraska personal income falls from previous year

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new report says personal income in Nebraska declined since last year.

The Pew Charitable Trust reported Wednesday that Nebraska was one of 10 states where incomes came in lower during the second quarter of 2017, compared with a year earlier. Nebraska and Alaska’s personal income were 0.3 percent lower.

The other states where personal incomes fell from a year earlier were North Dakota, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kansas, Connecticut, South Dakota, Wyoming and Rhode Island.

Personal income includes residents’ paychecks, Social Security benefits, employers’ contributions to retirement and health insurance plans, rental income and public assistance benefits.

Federal officials use state personal income to determine how much financial support each state will receive for certain programs, such as Medicaid.

Man accused of injuring baby daughter takes plea deal

FRANKLIN, Neb. (AP) — A south-central Nebraska man accused of injuring his 2-month-old daughter has taken a plea deal.

Court records say 21-year-old Dalton Howard, of Upland, pleaded guilty last week in Franklin County District Court to attempted intentional child abuse. Prosecutors had lowered the charge in exchange for Howard’s plea. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 9.

He was arrested in February 2016 after the girl was taken by her mother to a Minden hospital, where the baby was found to have bruising and a brain bleed. The little girl eventually was taken to an Omaha hospital for treatment.
