Event for beginning family campers set in eastern Nebraska

ASHLAND, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has scheduled a Becoming an Outdoors-Family Camp at Carol Joy Holling Camp near Ashland in eastern Nebraska.

The Sept. 23-24 camp is designed for families looking to get started camping but needing some encouragement. There will be fishing, hiking, bird watching, cooking outdoors, shooting, kayaking and much more.

Knights volleyball finishes 2-2 at McCook Sports Shoppe Invite

McCook – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team finished 2-2 at the Sports Shoppe Invitational.

In the first match on Friday, the Lady Knights avenged an earlier loss, defeating the Highland Community College Scotties in four sets 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, and 25-18.

Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said, “We played a great game against Highland and really attacked them. I thought we served and passed really well.”

Luisa Hernandez, Neci Sundquist, Amanda Kroeger, and Aly Camacho each had nine kills for the Lady Knights. Camacho had seven total blocks, Hernandez had 23 defensive digs, Taylin McNair 26 set assists to lead the Lady Knights.

In the second match on Friday, the Lady Knights were defeated by the Butler County Community College Lady Grizzlies in straight sets, 21-25, 21-25, and 19-25.

McCall said, “Against Butler we saw some good things but were just inconsistent.”

Hernandez led the Lady Knights in kills with 10 and 12 defensive digs. McNair had 20 set assists, Camacho had five total blocks.

“We will have some good opportunities tomorrow and we have to advantage and work hard.” McCall said.

In the first match on Saturday, the Lady Knights started out well but fell to the 16th ranked Cowley County Community College Lady Tigers in four sets 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, and 25-20.

Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said, “We had some really good moments against a good Cowley team, just pretty inconsistent.”

Luisa Hernandez had 12 kills and Neci Sundquist added 10 kills to lead the attack for the Lady Knights. Taylin McNair had 17 defensive digs and 17 set assists for the Lady Knights.

Lady Knights finished their portion of the tournament with a five set victory over Neosho County Community College16-25, 25-20, 25-22, 24-26, and 15-10.

“I’m glad we came out with a win against Neosho. It helped our mental toughness and we really used momentum to our advantage and took them out of their game.” McCall said. “We talked about serving aggressive and moving passers and really did a good job.”

Hernandez finished the match with 19 kills and 22 defensive digs to pace the Lady Knights. McNair had 21 set assists and Carlie Wytulka added 12 set assists.

The Lady Knights finish the Invitational at 2-2 and are now 6-9 on the season.

The Lady Knights return to McCook on Tuesday, September 12 for a triangular against McCook Community College and Laramie County Community College.

Sutherland under Boil Water Advisory

Officials with the Village of Sutherland have issued of Boil Water Advisory.

A Village news release says, “due to a complete loss of pressure, it is necessary to vigorously boil water for one minute for drinking and cooking or use an alternate source of water until sampling confirms that no further bacteriological contamination occurred.”

Officials say they will test the water and work with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Drinking Water Program to protect public health.

Christina L. (Marquardt) Motis

Christina L. (Marquardt) Motis, was born March 26, 1975, in Lincoln to Micheal and Linda (Gray) Marquardt, the second of two children, and passed away suddenly Sept. 1, 2017, in North Platte at the age of 42 years, 5 months and 6 days. As a young girl, she attended Friend Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1993. Christy, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, earned her CMA in 2012. For many years, Christy enjoyed working with the children at the youth and rehabilitation center in Geneva (YRTC). After earning her CMA, she was employed at nursing homes in North Platte, Lexington and Aurora.

Christy’s biggest passion was to help others in need. She had a heart of gold. It was a special time when she was with her family enjoying holidays. Christy was very active and enjoyed golf, softball and bowling (and loved to beat her brother – even bowling a 700). She loved watching cooking and baking shows and then trying to emulate what she saw. She was a good cook and loved to experiment.

Christy is survived by her daughter, Kylie Vyhnalek of Geneva; brother and wife, Scott and Wanda Marquardt of Crete; sister-in-law, Tammy Ruiz of Crete; half-sister, Pam and Todd Sharp of St. Louis, Missouri; aunts and uncles, Larry Van Lancker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jim Steele of Marion, Iowa, Gene Vecchione of East Meadow, New York, and Lavonne “Trix” Chamness of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nephews and nieces, Trey Marquardt of Crete, Nicholas Sharp of St. Louis, Missouri, Misty and Steven Chiu of New York, New York, and Vanessa, Andres and Erika Ruiz; great-niece, Ella Chiu; great-nephew, Grayson Chiu; and many other special family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; aunts, Judy Steele and Sandy Van Lancker and Muriel Vecchione; and a sister, Terry.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8, with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Steve Major officiating. Interment will be in Andrew Cemetery in Friend. Wallace Ray “Wally” Coker

Wallace Ray “Wally” Coker, 87, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, died Sept. 2, 2017, at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

He was born on Oct. 4, 1929, in Sutherland to Walter J. and Hazel M. (Stanton) Coker. Wally graduated from Sutherland High School.

He was hired by Union Pacific Railroad after graduation, then spent time in the military in Atlanta, Georgia.

He married Peg Dillon in August 1951. After his service time, they returned to North Platte, where he continued his career with Union Pacific Railroad. He moved to Cheyenne in 1980 to watch grandchildren and then the great-grandchildren grow. He retired from the railroad in 1992 after 42 years.

Wally was a member of Knights of Columbus in Nebraska, Union Pacific Employee Club and American Legion and was a former square dancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Ruth Banks, Beulah Wever and Kenneth Coker.

He is survived by his wife, Peg; three sons, W. Jim (Kim) Coker of Cheyenne, Tom (Judie) Coker of Thornton, Colorado, and Kevin (Manda) Coker of Fort Collins, Colorado; grandchildren, Kaylan Ferrari and Patrick (Sarah) Coker, both of Cheyenne, and Dillon Coker of Thornton; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Austin, Treyton, Kooper, Karter and Charlotte Ferrari and Caydence Coker, all of Cheyenne; brother-in-law, Floyd Wever; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty A. Kieselhorst

Betty A. Kieselhorst, 83, of Lincoln, formerly of North Platte, passed away Sept. 3, 2017.

She was born on Nov. 6, 1933, in Dalton to Ludwig A. and Lillian (Sander) Schroeder.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; and brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Carol Kieselhorst, Lou Schnell and Ron Rohde.

Betty is survived by her sons, Larry (Sharon) Kieselhorst of Columbia, South Carolina, and Lon (Cathy) Kieselhorst of Lincoln; grandsons, Brent (Abby) Kieselhorst and Kyle (Melissa) Kieselhorst; siblings, Shirley Green of Lincoln, Doris Rohde of Centennial, Colorado, and Lauren (Erika) of Sidney; and sister-in-law, Delores Schnell of Sidney.

Dennis Kruger

Dennis Kruger, 77, of North Platte, passed away Aug. 29, 2017, at his home.

Dennis was born on Jan. 3, 1940, in Wray, Colorado, to Ernest and Betty Kruger.

Dennis loved science and music. He built multiple devices involving electronics, astronomy, optics and mechanics. He also played an array of instruments that included the organ, accordion and guitar.

Dennis had friends that most people would envy. Our family is grateful for the things you all did for Dennis. There are far too many to list, so those reading this obituary know who you are.

His date of birth says one thing, but if you asked Dennis, he was 39 years old, and weighed around 160. His friends and family really miss this fellow.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jeanenne.

He is survived by his sisters, Karen Mitchell and Melanie Merrill, and brother, Ernest Kruger.

Cremation was chosen. A get together for friends and family will be planned in the future.

Florence Joan Dike

Florence Joan Dike, age 92 of Plano, TX, passed away August 15, 2017.  Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 1:00 p.m. September 16, 2017 at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.  Adams and Swanson Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.

NPCC Knights volleyball to compete in McCook Invitational

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team will travel to McCook to participate in the McCook Community College Invitational September 8 and 9.

On Friday, September 8 they will face the Highland Community College Scotties at noon, and then face the Butler County Community College Lady Grizzlies at 4 PM.

The Scotties defeated the Lady Knights at the Southeast Community College tournament on August 25 in three sets. They are 8-2 on the season. Leslie Polanco leads the Scotties in kills with 122, followed by Zealia Kleitz with 119 kills. Katie Pearson has 320 set assists and Polanco has 162 defensive digs.

The Lady Grizzlies are 4-2 on the season. One of their losses was to Colby Community College in three sets, who also defeated the Lady Knights in three sets. Brooke Fender has 45 kills and 42 defensive digs. Abby Goodrum leads the Lady Grizzlies in defensive digs with 66. Andie Nibarger has 89 set assists.

On Saturday, the Lady Knights will face the 16th rated Cowley County Community College Lady Tigers at 9 AM and then face the Neosho County Community College Lady Panthers at 1 PM.

The Lady Tigers are 6-3 on the season. Their three losses came at the hands of Lincoln Land Community College, Central Community College, and Coffeyville Community College. All three teams were ranked in the preseason Top 10 in Division II. They have not lost a set in their last four matches. Milica Kusmuk leads the Lady Tigers with 104 kills. JoLee Richhart has 168 defensive digs. Sydney Meget has 342 set assists.

The Lady Panthers are 8-3 on the season. Maryssa Recio has 105 kills, Madison Miller has 251 defensive digs and Breann Becker has 209 set assists to lead the Lady Panthers.

The Lady Knights are 4-7 on the season. Luisa Hernandez has 90 kills for the Lady Knights, Antonya Schaffert has 123 defensive digs, Shaylee Johnson has 42 total blocks and Carlie Wytulka has 330 set assists to lead the Lady Knights.

“I am excited to see how we do this weekend. I think we have some good chances and we need to make some steps forward mentally.” Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said, “We have worked hard on serving and passing and cleaning up play. We will continue to do that and hopefully be successful.”
