Ex-bank worker in Lincoln gets prison for embezzlement

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former bank employee has been sentenced to prison for embezzling more than $74,000 from a 72-year-old woman’s account.

25-year-old Holliann Casey, of Lincoln, was sentenced Thursday in Lancaster County District Court to three to eight years in prison. She had pleaded no contest to theft by unlawful taking.

A Pinnacle Bank customer reported unauthorized transactions on her account a year ago. Investigators say the woman first took her suspicions to Casey, who then tried to conceal the discrepancy by shifting funds from various accounts.

But an audit found that Casey had withdrawn $74,150 in cash from the woman’s account without her knowledge.

Bank officials reimbursed the woman for the loss.

Ex-school superintendent, wife under federal indictment

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former Santee Community Schools superintendent and his wife are under federal indictment, accused of theft.

A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted both 61-year-old Paul Sellon and his wife, 54-year-old Sue Ann Sellon on suspicion of theft of government money between 2010 and 2014 and making false statements to the U.S. Education Department. Paul Sellon is also accused of receipt of a bribe and 10 counts of wire fraud.

Paul Sellon had already been charged in federal court with theft of $314,000 from a federal program, but a judge allowed him to withdraw his guilty plea earlier this month. The judge expressed concerns about the plea agreement where the government agreed not to file charges against Sellon’s wife if he pleaded guilty.

Body found in burning car in western Nebraska field

MORRILL, Neb. (AP) — Western Nebraska sheriff’s officials are investigating after a body was found in a burning vehicle near Morrill.

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that firefighters responding Friday night to a burning vehicle in a field about three miles south of Morrill found a body inside once they had extinguished the flames.

Sheriff’s investigators say the identity of the body has not been confirmed.

Officials say the vehicle has been removed to a secure indoor facility and that the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office is helping in the investigation.

Authorities say they also have been in contact with the family of a person from Morrill who was reported missing Saturday morning.

Senators: Lawsuit could prompt Nebraska prison crowding fix

Gov. Pete Ricketts

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — After years of failed efforts to reduce overcrowding in Nebraska’s prisons, some lawmakers say a recent federal lawsuit may be the only way to force state officials to fix the problem.

The lawsuit filed by civil liberties groups didn’t surprise senators or other state officials, who were repeatedly warned they could face legal action if they didn’t address the issue themselves.

Nebraska lawmakers and Gov. Pete Ricketts have worked with national consultants and passed several laws designed to lessen the crowding, but the problem has persisted.

Some lawmakers say the state still isn’t spending enough to address a lack of prison mental health services to keep inmates from reoffending, and they doubt anything will change in next year’s session.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo police have arrested two people in connection to a missing pregnant woman and a newborn baby being found in an apartment building where she was last seen.

Police Chief David Todd released a statement early Friday saying a 32-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. Formal charges are pending.

The missing woman, 22-year-old Savanna Greywind, was last seen at her apartment Saturday afternoon. Authorities found a newborn in an apartment in the building Thursday but haven’t said whether Greywind is the baby’s mother.

The two suspects are Greywind’s neighbors. Todd says Greywind had gone to the apartment to help with a sewing project before disappearing.

Mutual of Omaha execs mull move to new downtown office

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Mutual of Omaha executives are considering moving to a new home office in downtown Omaha.

Chief Executive James Blackledge told the Omaha World-Herald Thursday that there’s no definite plan, location or timetable but also said a decision could come “in the not-too-distant future.”

The new headquarters wouldn’t be far from Mutual’s midtown office, which sits 33 blocks west of the Missouri River. The iconic structure was built in phases, and its dark tower is adorned at the top with the company’s Indian head logo.

About three-quarters of the 109-year-old company’s 5,300 employees work in Omaha. Blackledge says Mutual has added 500 jobs in the past 3½ years.

Seward lifts restrictions on drinking water

SEWARD, Neb. (AP) — Seward has lifted restrictions on drinking water, now that health officials have determined the water is safe.

The city made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

The water system lost pressure and integrity after a water main broke under an area flooded by the Big Blue River. Officials were concerned about contaminants entering the system, so they posted the warnings.

The system repairs have been made, and state officials say water samples submitted Monday and Tuesday tested out safe to drink.
