Man arrested in Omaha parking lot pickup slaying

omaha-policeOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a man suspected of using his pickup to fatally injure a man at an Omaha convenience store parking lot.

Police say the 45-year-old man was arrested Tuesday at an Omaha real estate office and booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder and use of a weapon. Online court records don’t show that he’s been formally charged yet.

Police say the pickup was seen on surveillance video taken outside the store where 40-year-old Seth Hansen was run over and killed early on Jan. 7. Hansen worked at the store.

It’s not yet clear whether the two men knew each other. Police have not publicly released any information about possible motives.

Nebraska authorities not sure driver knew his car hit person

car-pedestrian-accidentLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have talked to a man whose vehicle fatally struck an Iowa woman in southeast Nebraska.

Nineteen-year-old Merzedes Hart, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was killed late Friday night as she crossed U.S. Highway 6 northeast of Lincoln. The vehicle that hit her continued on.

The driver hasn’t been arrested, though. Capt. Ben Houchin of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says investigators aren’t certain the driver knew that he’d struck a human being. He’s reported that he thought he struck a deer.

Hart was a student at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and was on the track team.

Man dies, 8 more people treated for carbon monoxide in Grand Island

carbon-monoxideGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — A man has died and eight other people — including firefighters and a police officer — have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning in Grand Island.

Firefighters were sent to a home Tuesday on a medical call. They found the man and a woman in the basement. Authorities say the two were taken to a local hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been ordered. The woman’s condition hasn’t been released.

The two people’s names haven’t been released.

Carbon monoxide monitors warned firefighters and the police officer of their exposure, so they were treated at the hospital as well. They were discharged after three hours of treatment.

Fire officials blamed the carbon monoxide buildup on unvented gas-powered space heaters.

Bill aimed at first-time Nebraska homebuyers draws scrutiny

for-saleLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An effort to increase the number of first-time homebuyers in Nebraska is drawing scrutiny from some lawmakers who say the proposal could lead to abuse.

The measure presented to a legislative committee Wednesday would allow residents to set aside up to $150,000 in a special account to help their children or grandchildren cover a down payment on their first home.

Contributions would be in post-tax dollars, but earnings on the money after it’s deposited would be tax-free. Sen. Joni Craighead of Omaha says she introduced it in hopes that it would encourage young people to settle in Nebraska.

Some senators say the bill could favor wealthy families and might enable some people to avoid paying taxes.

FAIRMONT, Neb. (AP) — Flint Hills Resources has announced a planned $50 million expansion at its Fairmont ethanol plant.

The company will spend the money to produce a high-protein animal and fish feed ingredient from a portion of the plant’s distiller grains.

The technology, called maximized stillage co-products, was developed specifically for the dry mill ethanol industry.

Flint Hills says its Fairmont plant will be just the fourth in the world to use the technology.

It says the project will require the addition of a new building and two protein dryers. Its construction, set to be completed in the spring of 2018, is expected to create about 120 jobs.

The Fairmont plant produces 120 million gallons of ethanol and 310,000 tons of distillers grain a year.

High Court denies man’s plea to hear case against Nebraska regulators

supreme-courtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court will not take up a Lincoln businessman’s case against Nebraska banking regulators.

The country’s high court denied Bob Bennie Jr.’s petition on Tuesday.

Bennie filed the petition after the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year refused to reinstate his lawsuit, even though the judges said the regulators were wrong to target the financial adviser partly because of his criticism of President Barack Obama.

Bennie, a Lincoln financial adviser and tea party activist, called Obama a “communist” and an “evil man” in a 2010 interview with the Journal Star. Regulators cited those comments in emails to Bennie’s employer during their investigation into whether he had violated any regulations. The regulators ultimately took no action against him.

Wicked looking NP crash leads to minor injuries

car-vs-pole-east-4th-1-18-17Thankfully, sometimes car accidents look much worse than they actually are.  That was the case in North Platte on Wednesday morning.

At around 10:35 a.m., officers responded to the report of a one-vehicle accident in the 1600 block of East Fourth Street.

Officers arrived and discovered that a 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan, driven by 47-year-old Noor Omar, of Aurora, Colorado, had veered off of the roadway and struck a light pole owned by Municipal Light and Water.

Following an investigation, it was determined that Noor had taken his eyes off the roadway, causing him to veer to the right and strike the light pole.

Investigator John Deal said Noor complained of lower leg pain and his passenger, 32-year-old Muktar Abdulahi, also of Aurora, complained of chest pain.  Deal says neither man was transported to the hospital from the scene and that seatbelts were in use.
