Douglas County 911 call problem could take years to resolve

911-ServicesOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Douglas County officials are trying to resolve issues with its 911 system that give callers a rapid busy signal during a system outage.

Officials say it could take years to resolve.

In one incident, as many as 225,000 cellphone users in Douglas and Sarpy counties encountered the problem for nearly 13 hours in September 2015.

Nebraska Public Service Commission member Crystal Rhoades says it’s unacceptable the county doesn’t have a backup plan.

Mark Conrey, the county’s former 911 director, says most of the problem will be resolved with system upgrades that could be years away.

Conrey says the county’s emergency infrastructure isn’t advanced enough to reroute 911 calls. He says the county handles too many 911 calls to have them absorbed by a smaller center.

3 female enlisted Marines reporting for infantry duty

marine-corpsCAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) — Three enlisted female Marines are reporting to a ground combat unit in North Carolina and are among the first women in the service to do so.

1st Lt. John McCombs, a Marine Corps spokesman with the Second Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, says the three report Thursday to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. McCombs says the unit has three female officers that will assist them.

The Marines are declining to identify the enlisted women. Armistead says they will serve as a rifleman, a machine gunner and a mortar Marine. There are some 40,000 Marines in the Expeditionary Force.

In June, The Associated Press reported the Marine Corps had seven female officers either serving in combat posts or waiting in line to serve, and 167 women with non-combat jobs in front-line units.

Munoz is being held in lieu of $2 million bond.

Commissioner questions push to close Whiteclay beer stores

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska county official says he’s skeptical about a push to close four beer stores in Whiteclay, a village with a dozen residents that sells millions of cans annually next to a South Dakota Indian reservation.

Sheridan County Commissioner Jack Andersen says he’ll consider testimony at a public hearing Thursday in Rushville, but he doesn’t believe shuttering the stores will address the problems plaguing residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

The three-member commission set the hearing as it decides whether to recommend renewal of the stores’ liquor licenses to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Commissioners aren’t expected to act Thursday.

In November, the state liquor control commission ordered the Whiteclay stores to reapply for their licenses amid public pressure to reduce panhandling and public drunkenness.

Ricketts budget plan calls for cuts, tapping cash reserve

Gov. Pete Ricketts

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska state government would see a net budget cut of $151 million over the next six months under a plan floated by Gov. Pete Ricketts.

The proposal unveiled Thursday seeks to address a revenue shortfall in the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

The plan relies on a combination of spending cuts and pulling money from various government accounts. It would draw $92 million from the state’s rainy-day fund and about $22 million from more than two dozen cash funds.

Ricketts is also betting that online retailer Amazon will help the budget by generating another $11.2 million for the state. Amazon announced last month that it will start collecting sales taxes on purchases in Nebraska.

Ricketts has yet to release his full proposal for the upcoming two-year budget cycle.
