Poison Control: Keep kids away from medications, alcohol, poisonous plants

poisonOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center says it’s important to keep kids away from holiday hazards like alcohol, disc batteries and visiting relatives’ medications.

When families gather for the holidays, there are plenty of hazards.

The Poison Control Center says families should make sure to store visiting relatives’ medications out of reach of children.

And parents should watch out for the disc batteries that are used in many toys and remote controls because they are a choking hazard for kids.

Also, keep small children away from poisonous seasonal plants like mistletoe, holly berries, yew plants and poinsettias.

US gas prices jump 6 cents over 2 weeks to $2.26 a gallon

gas-cardCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of regular-grade gasoline has jumped 6 cents nationally over the past two weeks, to $2.26 a gallon.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday the hike mostly results from an agreement Nov. 30 by major oil-producing countries to slash output.

Lundberg says the current price is 20 cents a gallon above what it was one year ago. But the 2016 average price is 31 cents below the 2015 average, and $1.21 a gallon below the 2014 average.

Gas in San Diego was the highest in the continental United States at $2.68 a gallon on average Friday. The low average was in El Paso, Texas, at $1.99 a gallon.

The U.S. average diesel price is $2.48, up 4 cents from two weeks ago.

Pet owners urged to bring animals inside during bitter cold

cold-thermometerOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Humane Society is urging pet owners to bring their animals inside during the current bitter cold weather.

With single-digit temperatures and wind chills below zero expected over the next several days in eastern Nebraska, the Humane Society says the best option will likely be bringing pets inside.

If pets must be outside, they should have a warm, insulated kennel with bedding — such as straw — that won’t stay wet.

An Omaha woman was ticketed for animal cruelty on Tuesday after leaving two Chihuahuas outside on tethers in the backyard. One of the dogs died from hypothermia.

Nativity scene to be displayed again at Nebraska Capitol

NE-State-CapitolLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Chicago-based group is once again planning to set up a Nativity scene inside the Nebraska Capitol, a move that has drawn criticism in the past from those who say it’s a state endorsement of a religion.

The Thomas More Society will gather in front of the display at noon Monday for the third time in as many years. The group has applied for and received permission to set up the display in the center of the Capitol, on the ground floor.

Nebraska Capitol administrators have said the building is public and open to citizens of all faiths. Last year, administrators allowed a display by atheist groups.

Tom Brejcha, Thomas More Society’s president and chief counsel, says the display represents constitutionally protected free speech by a private group.

Nebraska Supreme Court upholds dismissal of sidewalk lawsuit

ne-supreme-courtLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld without comment a lower court’s dismissal of a lawsuit against the city of Lincoln by a jogger who fell on an uneven city sidewalk.

The high court’s ruling Friday noted only that “an equally divided court” affirmed Lancaster County District Judge Andrew Jacobsen’s dismissal last year of Dawn Amory’s lawsuit.

Amory had been seeking more than $19,000 for medical expenses she incurred after falling and breaking her pelvis five years ago. She argued the city should have found and fixed the sidewalk tile that was raised about an inch.

Jacobsen had said Amory didn’t show the city was neglecting the more than 1,500 miles of sidewalk it maintains, and that no one had complained about the problem beforehand.

Police say Carney admitted to touching the girl, but said he stopped and apologized.

Carney was ordered to report for his prison term on Jan. 3.
