Health officials confirm case of tuberculosis in Omaha

health-alertOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha health officials have confirmed that a Benson High School student has tuberculosis, exposing nearly 200 students and a dozen school staff members to the contagious lung disease.

Douglas County officials said Wednesday that 193 students and 12 staffers were exposed, and many will have to be tested.

Tuberculosis is relatively rare in the United States. State health records say only 137 cases were recorded in Nebraska from 2011 through 2015.

Tuberculosis is slow to develop, and it can take up to 10 weeks before a person who has been exposed tests positive for the infection. Common symptoms include unexplained rapid weight loss, profuse coughing, night sweats and fever. It is treated with a course of antimicrobial drugs.

EPA to keep strict gas mileage standards in place

gas-guageDETROIT (AP) — The Obama administration has decided not to change government fuel economy requirements for cars and light trucks despite protests from automakers.

Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Campaign environmental group, says he was told by people with knowledge of the decision that it will be announced on Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The decision means that automakers will still have to meet strict fuel economy requirements from 2022 through 2025. The standards had required the fleet of new cars to average 54.5 miles per gallon. But there was a built-in reduction if buying habits changed, dropping the number to 50.8.

Becker says the EPA will take public comments and enact the decision before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated in January.

Omaha man refuses to remove golf amenities from backyard

odd-newsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha resident who lost a lawsuit over the golf putting green, pool, fire cauldrons and other outdoor amenities he added to his suburban property, has refused to abide by a court order to remove some of the elements in his sports wonderland.

The Fire Ridge homeowners association sued Eric Marsh four years ago, claiming his development strayed from approved plans. A judge ruled in favor of Fire Ridge last year and ordered Marsh to remove some items, including tee boxes and flagpoles.

Marsh appealed the case to the Nebraska Supreme Court, but the high court also ruled in favor of Fire Ridge. Marsh is to appear in court in December to explain why he hasn’t complied with the court order.

Marsh says he will continue to fight the case.

NP police warn of Municipal Light and Water scam

scam-alertIn the “season of giving,” there always seems to be people or groups of people who see it as the season of taking.

The North Platte Police Department says they have received numerous reports of a scam involving callers who claim to be representatives of Municipal Light and Water.

According to Investigator John Deal, citizens have reported receiving calls from different phone numbers.  But, in each case, the callers claim that the victims are behind on their utility bills. The callers then ask for payment, usually via prepaid credit card, wire transfer or a gift card.  The victims are told that their utilities will be shut off if they don’t pay, according to Deal.

The scammers are quite crafty too. Deal says when citizens call the number that called back, they hear the same automated greeting used by ML&W, and are eventually connected to a live person requesting payment.

Officials at ML&W say they do not contact customers by phone to request payment, and will only notify their customers about out of order accounts via US Mail.

Investigator Deal says it is not believed that ML&W’s customer database has been breached, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been notified of the matter.

The scammers are believed to be from a foreign country, which will make locating and prosecuting them difficult, Deal says.

He says anyone who has received a call of this nature and has given personal information should contact police immediately.

ML&W recommends that customers contact them directly if they believe their account is out of order so proper payment arrangements can be made.
