Opponents say barring pot use in Denver businesses unwise

Colorado-MarijuanaDENVER (AP) — Opponents of a state ruling that would prevent bars and many restaurants in Denver from offering on-site marijuana consumption say the ruling would overturn a law approved by voters and force people to sneak around while they use pot and consume alcohol.

The new rule announced Friday by the Liquor Enforcement Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue bars liquor-license holders from applying for a permit to allow pot-consumption.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says using alcohol and marijuana together increases impairment.

Mason Tvert, a spokesman for the national Marijuana Policy Project, says the measure approved by voters this month would allow servers to keep track of customers who drink and consume pot products instead of forcing them to go outside or hide behind closed doors.

Man charged in toddler’s death faces bail of $3 million

Jail-Bars-and-Cuffs_mediumPAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — A 24-year-old man charged in the death of his girlfriend’s toddler has had his bail set at $3 million for a series of charges.

Armond Floyd is charged with child abuse resulting in the death of Imani Edwards, who would have turned 2 on Friday.

The girl was found unresponsive in a bathtub on Sunday while in Floyd’s care and died at a hospital Tuesday. Police have not detailed her injuries, but say they were intentionally inflicted by Floyd.

His bail on that charge was set Thursday at $2.5 million. On Friday, his bail on a separate charge of violating a no-contact order was set at $500,000.

At the time of the girl’s death, Floyd already faced domestic and child abuse charges for an earlier incident involving the child’s mother.

Cabela’s execs collect bonuses, despite missing profit goals

cabelasOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — New documents show that top executives at outdoor outfitter Cabela’s collected big cash bonuses before being bought out by rival Bass Pro Shops, despite failing to meet profit goals they had earlier set to earn those bonuses.

The bonuses were spelled out in documents Sidney-based Cabela’s filed Thursday with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission. Chief Executive Tommy Millner garnered the most at $392,376. The bonuses totaled about $1.2 million.

But the documents also show executives failed to achieve the financial goals laid out ahead of time to qualify for the bonuses. Instead, company leaders simply changed the objectives after the fact to bring the goals in line with actual performance.

Messages left Saturday for a Cabela’s spokesman were not immediately returned.

Trump win sinks effort to expand Medicaid in Nebraska

medicaidLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers who have fought for years to expand Medicaid coverage under the federal health care law are backing off their effort now that Donald Trump has won the presidential race and Republicans held their majority in Congress.

Trump’s victory casts doubt over the law and raises new questions about whether expanding Medicaid would remain an option for states such as Nebraska that have not yet done so.

Sen. John McCollister of Omaha, who introduced a Medicaid coverage bill this year, says supporters decided not to pursue it when the 2017 session convenes. McCollister says it’s prudent for lawmakers to wait until they know how the law will change.

Advocates for expansion say they’ll keep pressing the issue.

Omaha Tribe wins $100,000 grant to help save its language

omaha-tribe-of-nebraskaMACY, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Tribe’s effort to preserve its native language is getting a boost from a $100,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The tribe, which is centered in Macy, Nebraska, just south of Sioux City, Iowa, has more than 7,000 members.

The tribal council estimates fewer than 150 know parts of the language, but elders and teachers say only 12 remain fluent.

The tribe hopes to revive its language by teaching it in schools.

The grant will help create an introductory textbook on the language and an audio CD that will be distributed to all schools on the reservation.

Analyst: Gas prices dip to US average of $2.20 per gallon

gas-guageCAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average price of regular grade gasoline has fallen nationally to $2.20 per gallon, a drop of 6 cents over the past two weeks.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg updated the figures Sunday, predicting that prices would continue inching down unless a meeting of oil-producing nations later this month culminates in “a credible agreement to freeze or reduce” production.

A seasonal weakness in demand was one reason behind the early-November decline. Lundberg cited another influence: With autumn maintenance projects wrapping up, U.S. refiners are increasing supplies.

Those factors combined to create the drop in average prices, despite a small rise in crude oil prices.

Gas in San Diego was most expensive in the continental U.S., at $2.73 on average. The low average was in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at $1.78 per gallon.

Hackers break into Nebraska irrigation district’s computers

youve-been-hackedKEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Hackers broke into the Central Platte Natural Resources District’s computer system, but officials don’t believe anyone’s identity was compromised.

But the irrigation district has hired experts to determine exactly what data was accessed about three weeks ago.

General Manager Lyndon Vogt says it doesn’t look like hackers got into the database with Social Security numbers, names and addresses of people served by the natural resources district.

Vogt says the hackers disabled the computer system’s antivirus software and planted a virus. But no data was lost because of an automated back-up feature that runs every 15 minutes.

A report on the hacking is expected by mid December.
