fatal-crashPLEASANTON, Neb. (AP) — One person is dead and another was injured in a highway crash in central Nebraska.

Authorities say 66-year-old Nancy Jackson of Ravenna was killed in the crash around 6:15 p.m. Thursday north of Pleasanton. James Psota, a 55-year-old man from Ord, was injured.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 10 and 340th Road in Buffalo County. Authorities say Jackson was driving westbound on 340th Road in a 2007 Mazda sports utility vehicle. Psota was driving a 2013 Dodge Ram pickup northbound on Highway 10 when the vehicles collided in the intersection. No passengers were in either vehicle.

Authorities closed the intersection for four hours to investigate the crash. The Buffalo County attorney has ordered an autopsy for Jackson.

Activists call for Nebraska officers to leave Standing Rock

state-patrolLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska activists are urging state officials to summon back the law enforcement officers who were sent to North Dakota to help respond to anti-pipeline protests.

Bold Nebraska organizers and activist Joseph Hams are planning to deliver 29,000 petition signatures to the governor’s residence on Monday. Protesters have gathered near Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to try to block construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Nebraska State Patrol troopers were sent at North Dakota’s request under a 50-state compact that allows states to support each other in an emergency.

Thirteen Nebraska State Patrol employees returned to the state from North Dakota earlier this month, but more were sent at North Dakota’s request. North Dakota is covering their costs.

The petition is directed at Gov. Pete Ricketts.

New Bellevue city council member cited for permit violation

city-of-bellevueBELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol has ticketed a newly elected Bellevue city councilman for an electrical license violation.

The investigation stems from a complaint filed by DC Electric of Bellevue against councilman Pat Shannon. Shannon was elected to the council in this month’s election.

Dave Compton, the company’s owner, says Shannon hired his firm to install electric panels in a newly renovated building. Compton says that once the work was done more permits were issued to DC Electric without his knowledge. Compton says he didn’t want his company liable for workers he did not hire.

Shannon says he paid the company about $50,000 for services. He says he met with the patrol and was told it was “no big deal.”

The Nebraska Department of Labor said Friday that the preliminary rate was well below the preliminary national rate of 4.9 percent. The national rate dropped one-tenth of a point, to 4.9 percent.

The U.S. Labor Department says New Hampshire and South Dakota had the nation’s lowest unemployment rates, with each at 2.8 percent. North Dakota’s rate unemployment rate was 3 percent, and Hawaii and Utah were tied at 3.2 percent. Nebraska, Massachusetts, and Vermont were tied at 3.3 percent.
