Nebraska man honors veterans with rolling memorial

vietnam-veteranCRETE, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man who served in the Army in Vietnam is trying to honor other veterans by collecting their names on his 1946 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery as part of a rolling memorial.

Sam Aughe of Crete has gathered 1,300 names since just before Veterans Day 2015. Almost all of the names signed with a black marker are of people who served in the U.S. military, but the vehicle is adorned with the names of a few police officers, firefighters and members of the Mexican Army and Australian Air Force as well. Some people have signed for their loved ones who were killed in action, are still missing or have since died.

Aughe hasn’t placed his own name on the olive green vehicle with a white star on each door and a red, white and blue grill and fenders.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Students have staged a walkout at an Omaha high school, saying they’re protesting the election of Donald Trump to be the next president of the United States.

Hundreds gathered Friday morning on a sidewalk and onto the grounds of Central High, a school with a diverse student population that sits a few blocks west of downtown Omaha. No incidents of violence have been reported.

Several students carried signs. Among them: “Love Trumps Hate” and “We Are Stronger Together.”

Officials stationed along the curb kept students from spilling onto a busy street.

Administrators held an assembly Thursday to talk to students about the election and the students’ political and social concerns. Hillary Clinton had won a mock election at the school.

A downtown Omaha anti-Trump protest Wednesday ended with two arrests.

ALLIANCE, Neb. (AP) — The former Nebraska Boys Ranch won’t be reopening to help troubled boys.

Adult & Teen Challenge of the Midlands acquired the site southeast of Alliance in 2012 after Boys Ranch suspended services its services in March 2010. The organization wanted to place up to 16 boys there for treatment of substance abuse through a Christian-centered program.

The organization’s Bob Larson says in a news release that licensing complexities and expected operating costs have since forced his organization to focus its efforts on existing adult ministries.

Larson says his organization will be talking to other nonprofit, youth and Christian organizations about the future of the Panhandle property.

Nebraska man pleads guilty, is sentenced in Iowa abuse case

judgeshipCOUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A Nebraska man has pleaded guilty to amended Iowa charges of indecent contact with a child and has been given a suspended six-year prison sentence and two years of probation.

50-year-old Michael Robinson, of Omaha, Nebraska, entered the plea Tuesday, the day before his trial was set to begin.

Robinson had originally been charged with several counts of third-degree sexual abuse stemming from several incidents spanning from 2007 to 2012.

Council Bluffs police say that at that time, Robinson was in a relationship with a relative of the victim. Another relative reported her suspicions of sexual abuse to Iowa Child Protective Services in March 2015.

Authorities say Robinson inappropriately touched the girl from the time she was about 10 until she was 15.

EPA says railcar cleaning firm mishandling dangerous wastes

epaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency is ordering Nebraska Railcar Cleaning Services to do a better job handling the crude oil, ethanol and other wastes it generates in Omaha.

Regulators said Thursday that the company could face substantial fines of $14,023 per day if it doesn’t comply with the rules for handling waste.

The EPA says the company has been keeping crude oil and ethanol in open, unmarked containers that could lead to fires.

In April 2015, two Nebraska Railcar workers died after an explosion inside a railcar they were cleaning.

Company officials said Thursday that no one was available immediately to comment on the EPA statement.

Nebraska’s net tax receipts meet projections in October

ne-department-of-revenueLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska collected $233 million in net tax revenue in October, right on par with projections.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue released its latest tax receipt numbers on Thursday. Net sales-and-use taxes, individual income taxes, corporate income taxes and miscellaneous taxes all matched the forecast.

The numbers matched because the forecast was updated on Oct. 28. The Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board revised its forecast for the current fiscal year downward by $172 million, projecting that the state would collect roughly $4.4 billion.

Nebraska lawmakers and Gov. Pete Ricketts will face a projected budget shortfall of more than $900 million when they convene in January to craft a new two-year state budget.

2-vehicle accident sends 3 to hospital in NP

NP Police and Fire personnel responded to a two-vehicle injury accident at the intersection of 8th and Oak Streets on Thursday afternoon. Two adults and a child were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

A Thursday afternoon accident sent three people to the hospital in North Platte.

Just before 5:00 p.m., North Platte police and fire personnel responded to the report of an injury rollover accident at the intersection of 8th and Oak Streets.

According to Sergeant Gary Hovey, a minivan was southbound 0n Oak Street when, at the same time, a sedan was eastbound on 8th Street.  Hovey says the vehicles entered the intersection, which is unmarked, and collided.

The minivan rolled onto its top and came to rest south of the intersection on Oak Street, while the sedan remained in the intersection.

Police say two adults and a child from the minivan were transported to Great Plains Health with minor injuries.

Because the accident occurred at an unmarked intersection, Hovey said the vehicle on the right, the sedan, would have had the right-of-way. However, the crash remains under investigation.

“This time of year when the sun can block your view, these unmarked intersections are dangerous and people need to use caution,” Hovey said.

It is believed that both vehicles will be a total loss.

nebraska-corrections-patch-LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Some Nebraska corrections employees will get raises under an agreement with Gov. Pete Ricketts’ administration.

The governor’s office announced Thursday that the correctional workers’ union has reached an agreement with the Department of Correctional Services. The raises will go into effect under their current contract, starting Nov. 28.

The raises are part of an effort to address staffing shortages in the corrections department. The increase in the remainder of the current budget cycle will cost roughly $1.9 million.

The agreement includes raises of 5 percent increase for caseworkers, 4.5 percent for corrections officers, 5.4 percent for corporals, 6 percent for sergeants, 3.7 percent for registered nurses and 4.2 percent for food service specialists. Mental health practitioners will get raises of 2.4 percent or 4 percent, depending on their classification.
