Former Iowa city clerk convicted in Nebraska child sex case

sex-offendersDAKOTA CITY, Neb. (AP) — A former city clerk in northwest Iowa has been sentenced in a Nebraska court to probation for trying to set up a sexual encounter with someone he thought was a teenage boy.

61-year-old Douglas Furlich, of Lawton, Iowa, was sentenced Wednesday to three years of intense supervised release.

Furlich pleaded no contest in September to attempted sexual assault by use of an electronic device.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Furlich posted an ad online “looking for a younger guy.” Officials say an undercover officer responded, pretending to be a 15-year-old boy. Police say Furlich went in June to meet the boy at a South Sioux City, Nebraska, where he was arrested. He was fired by the Lawton City Council after the arrest.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha teen convicted of the gang-related killings of two others has been sentenced to 75 years in prison.

Charles Trotter was sentenced Friday.

A Douglas County jury found Trotter guilty in June of two counts of first-degree murder and other crimes in the shootings of 25-year-old Dexter Joseph and 26-year-old Marcel Lovejoy. Both men were found dead in a north-central Omaha apartment on Jan. 3, 2015.

Trotter was 16 at the time but was prosecuted as an adult.

Trotter’s first trial ended in a mistrial in March after a several fistfights broke out in a courtroom hallway during a lunch break. The brawl involved more than 30 friends and relatives of Trotter and his victims. Four of the people were arrested.

Big victories for legal pot, but path ahead is uncertain

marijuana-jointLOS ANGELES (AP) — The number of Americans living in states with recreational marijuana more than tripled after at least three more states voted to fully legalize the drug.

But the election of Republican Donald Trump and GOP majorities in the Senate and House tempered advocates’ excitement about an anticipated federal easing of restrictions.

Ethan Nadelmann is founder of the nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance, a pro-legalization group. He and other advocates say the president-elect is “unpredictable.” And they are unsure where he stands on marijuana issues.

Trump has said in the past that he supports state laws legalizing medical marijuana.

Still, the industry may be too big and valuable for a Trump administration to stop. Seven states have now legalized recreational pot, including California, the nation’s most populous, and Nevada and Massachusetts.

With death penalty back, Nebraska looks ahead to executions

lethal-injectionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Now that Nebraska voters have restored the death penalty, Gov. Pete Ricketts says he plans to meet with the attorney general to discuss how to resume executions.

Ricketts said Wednesday it’s too early to know exactly how the state will acquire the lethal injection drugs it currently lacks or whether Nebraska will change its protocol. Nebraska has struggled to obtain all of the necessary drugs, and Ricketts previously said the state would halt its efforts until after Tuesday’s statewide vote.

Voters overturned the Legislature’s decision last year to abolish capital punishment. A coalition partially financed by Ricketts launched a ballot drive that placed the issue on the ballot after lawmakers overrode the governor’s veto in May 2015.

Ricketts says the vote demonstrates clear public support for capital punishment in Nebraska.

vandalismLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities are investigating an act of vandalism at the Nebraska Capitol.

Authorities learned Wednesday that someone spray-painted the words “Trump = Racism” and “Ricketts = Racism” at the Capitol’s north entrance, beneath the stairs, in an area where state officials park.

Nebraska State Patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins says authorities are reviewing security camera surveillance footage to try to identify any suspects.

Gov. Pete Ricketts is in China on a foreign trade mission. Republican Donald Trump was elected president in Tuesday’s election.
