Lake McConaughy seeking volunteers for cleanup day

lake-macOGALLALA, Neb. (AP) — Volunteers are being sought to help clean up Lake McConaughy (muh-KAH’-nuh-hay) State Recreation Area in western Nebraska.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says it has joined the Keep Keith County Beautiful organization and Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District in organizing the cleanup day. The event is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 5. The lake sits just north of Ogallala in Keith County.

Trash bags, buckets, pickers and orange vests will be available for volunteers to use.

A park entry permit is required of each vehicle entering the recreation area.

Police identify man found dead in Omaha lake

police-lights-redOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Authorities have identified the 48-year-old man whose body was pulled from a southwest Omaha lake last Friday, but police say the death is not considered suspicious.

The man was identified as Brad Gladwell.

Gladwell’s body was found after someone saw it floating in Lake Zorinsky and called 911. He was found near the South 168th Street entrance.

Court records show that Gladwell had been arrested in September on suspicion of electronic enticement of a teenage girl. Lincoln Police said Gladwell tried to meet an underage girl to have sex.

A hearing in that enticement case was scheduled for Nov. 21.

Jean H. Liska

Jean H. Liska, 85, of North Platte, passed away Oct. 29, 2016 at Great Plains Health. She was born July 29, 1931 to Jacob and Marjorie (Huffer) Deines at Cheyenne, WY. She lived on a farm outside of Briggsdale, CO with her parents until her father passed away. Jean and her mother lived in Briggsdale, Greeley and Cheyenne before moving to North Platte. Jean was united in marriage to Robert Liska. Together they loved to travel. She enjoyed crocheting and made numerous afghans. She is survived by her husband, Robert; her children, Melody (David) Keele, Lisa Harper and Malia (Mike) Trujillo; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larrel Moore; a sister, Ala Mae Schaeffer; and a great granddaughter, Jocelynn. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Mary Eileen Gutherless

Mary Eileen Gutherless, 89, of Maxwell passed away October 29, 2016 at her home.
Mary was born September 20, 1927 in Lincoln County to Earl and Mary (Martin) Burke. She graduated from Maxwell High School in 1946 and then attended Barnes Business College in Denver, CO. She returned to North Platte, to be near and take care of her family, and work at an insurance agency. On May 24, 1952 she married Ivan Gutherless in North Platte. The couple made their home south of Maxwell, where she and Ivan raised their families. Mary was very involved in the working of both families’ ranches, the Burke and the Gutherless places. She always had large gardens, canned, raised chickens, and was very popular with the neighbors for her home cooking and hospitality. A special “thank you” to caregivers, Betty Tolle, Vicky McDermott, and Julie Sprague, and Great Plains Hospice.
Survivors include her children, Douglas L. (Sharon) Gutherless of Maxwell, Kent D. (Karen) Gutherless of North Platte, and Joleen K. (Royce) Schauer of Maxwell; grandchildren, Lori Gutherless of North Platte, Tara (Jason) Trisdale of North Platte, Curtis Duane Gutherless of Knoxville, TN, Sara Ann (Jared) Woody of Lexington, and Russell (Julie) Gutherless of Grand Island; nine great-grandchildren brother, Gary (Patsy) Burke of Brady; and numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Ivan.

Michael D. ‘Mike’ Lemmer Service Notice

Michael D. ‘Mike’ Lemmer passed away Friday, October 28 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 10:30am at St. John’s Catholic Church in Stapleton. Wanda Nelson, age 94 of North Platte passed away October 28, 2016 at Bluffton, Indiana. Wanda was born in Frontier County, N.E. March 3, 1922 to Daniel and Ruie (Wood) Maret. Wanda was a graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. After Normal Training education obtained there she taught in country schools before her marriage. She was an avid reader. She faithfully did the Jumble Puzzle everyday in the paper as well as other extra puzzles on her Kindle. Wanda and Clark lived in Lincoln County North of Moorefield from 1943-1975. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and enjoyed the local homemaker clubs. She taught Sunday School and was a very active member of the Berean Church in Curtis. In 1975 she and Clark moved to North Platte, N.E. There she became involved in the Berean Church. She also baby sat for her next door neighbor for many years. She and Clark enjoyed many trips together visiting their children in Portland, Oregon and Bluffton, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 yrs. Clark Nelson, and 2 brothers John and Marvin Maret. Surviving are her children Bradley (Marcy), of North Platte and Geraldine (Warren) Morton of Bluffton, Indiana, granddaughters, Lisa and LeAnn Morton of Indianapolis, sisters, Hilda Wolgamott of Curtis and Claudia Benda of Alliance N.E., special granddaughter, Amy Hanridge of Pinetop, Az, several nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Berean Church. Burial will be at the Curtis Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8 pm Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 pm at Carpenter Memorial Chapel who is in care of arrangements. Loretta J. Clang

Loretta J. Clang, age75 of North Platte, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2016 at her home with her family by her side. She was born March 7, 1941 at Broken Bow to Roy and Eva (Myers) Kieborz. Loretta attended rural schools in Litchfield and later graduated from Thedford High School in 1959. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Mid Plains Community College and worked in administration with juvenile probation for a number of years. She was united in marriage to Nels Clang on May 29, 1960 at Seneca Nebraska. The couple lived in Anselmo before moving to North Platte in 1968. Loretta was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an avid reader, wrote poetry and played the french horn with the Sandhills and North Platte Symphonies. She and Nels attended the Bethel Church. Her family that will cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years, Nels, of North Platte, her five sons, Bob (Judy) Clang and Joe (Yvonne) Clang both of North Platte, Dan (Tammy) Clang of Greeley, Co, Ron (Margie) Clang of Colorado Springs, CO, and James (Stefanie) Clang of Broken Bow, NE, two sisters, Diana (Jim) Wilson of Lincoln and Cathy (Marty) Templin of Longmont, CO, grandchildren, Larry, David (Tina), Jamdan, Aaron (Sara), Caala, Emma, Matthew, Renee, Timothy, Jonathan, Benjamin, Brandon, Tasha, Abigail, Guydon, and Charlie, great-grandchildren, Gavin, Baylee, Rowan, Fynlee, Joseph, Parker, Brody, Miley and Ella, and her coffee girls that included Linda Rudolph, Sharon Shuler, Shirley Eggers, Linda Atkeson, and Lynette Britain. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother. Family and friends will celebrate her life at 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at The Bethel Church and burial will follow at Ft. Omaha medical center gets nearly $20M for training center

UNMCOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska Medical Center has been awarded nearly $20 million in federal funds to develop a new training, simulation, and quarantine center for highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola.

The Omaha medical center announced the $19.8 award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Friday.

The training center will have its own floor in UNMC’s already-planned $102 million Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning. That 183,742-square-foot facility will be at the southeast corner of 42nd and Emile Streets. Construction is set to begin soon and be completed by September 2018.
