Auditors find over $13M in uncashed checks at state agency
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — State auditors have found more than $13 million in uncashed checks piling up at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
The 192 checks were all related to the Medicaid drug rebate program.
The state Auditor’s office called the uncashed checks a significant management problem.
Officials at the agency say the backlog of checks developed because they needed to be researched and checked before depositing, but staffing issues made that hard to do.
One HHS accountant retired in April and a second one took medical leave in June. Officials say that left the department without an accountant familiar with the drug rebate program.
Omaha school superintendent to retire after 4 years on job
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha school Superintendent Mark Evans plans to retire at the end of year after only four years on the job.
The 57-year-old Evans said Monday that he decided to step down so he could spend more time with his aging parents and his wife’s parents.
Evans joined the district in 2013, and helped pass a $421 million bond issue.
Five of the nine seats on the district’s school board are up for election this November.
US probes complaints of more F-150 brake failures
DETROIT (AP) — U.S. safety regulators are investigating whether a recall of Ford F-150 pickup trucks for brake failures should be expanded to more model years.
The probe covers about 282,000 pickups with 3.5-liter six-cylinder engines from 2015 and 2016. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received 25 complaints alleging sudden brake loss in the trucks. No injuries were reported.
In May, Ford recalled about 271,000 six-cylinder F-150s from 2013 and 2014 because brake fluid could leak from the master cylinder and cause brake failure.
The safety agency says it received 10 complaints about 2015 brake failures and another 15 about the 2016 models.
Investigators will decide if the 2015 and 2016 models should be added to the recall. The F-series pickup is the top-selling vehicle in the U.S.
Gretna school’s refusal to sponsor pro-life club challenged
GRETNA, Neb. (AP) — A Gretna High School student is questioning the school’s unwillingness to sponsor her club dedicated to fighting abortion and educating mothers on other options.
The Thomas More Society wrote a letter to district administrators Monday, saying the school’s decision is discrimination and violates the First Amendment and the Equal Access Act.
The society describes itself as a national nonprofit law firm “dedicated to restoring respect in law for life, family and religious liberty.” It’s representing high school junior Bridget Christensen, who is a co-president of Dragons for Life, a chapter of the Students for Life of America.
School administrators say the club was denied sponsorship because its topic is a controversial one that’s political and religious.
The club currently is permitted to meet at the school, but not during school hours.

One person is dead after a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop crashed in Sheridan County.
At approximately 10:20 p.m. (MDT), a trooper observed a 2001 Mercury Sable run a stop sign while entering Highway 27 from a county road north of Gordon in Sheridan County. The vehicle headed southbound on Highway 27.

The vehicle continued down several county roads, then headed back toward Highway 27 turning northbound onto the highway. Approximately two miles north of Gordon, the suspect vehicle and patrol unit made contact with each other.
The suspect vehicle left Highway 27, entered the east ditch and rolled.

Second fire in same day damages Lincoln church
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say several hours after Lincoln firefighters extinguished a fire at a church a second fire was started.
Lincoln Fire Battalion Chief Jeremy Gregg says the second fire in the sanctuary of Belmont Baptist Church wasn’t just the original fire rekindling.
Gregg says that arson is suspected in both fires that burned in the church on Monday. The second fire Monday night was extinguished quickly.
The fires caused roughly $350,000 to $400,000 in damage.
Pastor Mike Kidder says the church hopes to be able to use the fellowship hall once it is cleaned up, but he’s not sure yet what the congregation will do.
