Lincoln player taking a knee in season-long anthem protest

flying-flagLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln high school player has joined San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in taking a knee during the national anthem, protesting racial oppression and inequality.

Sterling Smith of Southeast High School says he did so before last week’s game and will do so again Friday against Omaha North and continue through the rest of the season.

Smith says the discussions that followed Kaepernick’s protests shed light on the difficult subject of race and give people a chance to talk about those issues. Smith says he, too, wanted to start a conversation.

The school district says it encourages athletes and spectators to stand during the national anthem but also recognizes the nation’s freedom of speech. It says no one is legally required to stand.

James Gordon “Jim” Doyle

doyle

James Gordon “Jim” Doyle, age 88 of Tryon, NE passed away Friday September 16, 2016 at Linden Court in North Platte.
Jim was born on April 11, 1928 in North Platte, NE to Daniel T. and Ruthie R. (Gordon) Doyle. His family lived on a small farmstead south of Tryon for a short time until moving to Gordon Homestead north of Ringgold. He lived there for the rest of his life. Jim graduated from Tryon High School with the class of 1945. He ranched with his father in the years to follow. During this time he started riding bareback horses and bulls at some of the local rodeos. In true rough stock rider fashion, he often spoke of the horses he’d drawn and many of the other cowboys with whom he’d become friends. His face always lit up when he told rodeo stories. In 1952 he enlisted in the US Navy and entered the Cadet Program as the only applicant accepted who was not college educated. He later left the Cadet Program and entered Radio School. Jim served aboard the USS Tripoli, copying Morse code as a radio man. He saw much of post WWII Europe. For many years after his service, he continued to enjoy copying code. After leaving the service, Jim took over the family ranch and started his own cow herd. Over the years he transitioned from Hereford cows to the Angus breed and built a very well respected herd. In 1963 Jim married Dorothy “Jean” Wiley Fisher. She had three children, Ranold Calvin, Wiley Kent, and Shannon Marie and together they had Hannah Ruth. He was extremely interested in the Civil War. He read and reread anything he could get his hands on that pertained to that time period. Over the years he obtained stacks and stacks of Civil War books, magazines and movies. Jim’s passion was the Sandhills, and his cattle and horses. He enjoyed helping neighbors with their fall work and brandings. He was still dragging calves to the fire at the ripe old age of 85 and could still cover one that bucked then too! Jim helped several young ranchers get a start in the business by “loaning” them cows for a few years.
Jim is survived by his children Randy (Kathy) Fisher, Wiley “Kent” (Kathleen) Fisher, Shannon (Michael Lapsley) Fisher and Hannah (Matthew) Burch; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; as well as other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jean; parents; sisters Pearl LaVonne Carlson and Loa Daly Duggan; brothers-in-law Don Daly, Ed Duggan and Nels Carlson.
Memorials are suggested to the McPherson County Fire Department and online condolences may be shared at www.adamsswanson.com. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday September 21, 2016 at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery in Tryon with full military honors. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

University fined $900 for false alarms at Omaha arena

unoOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The University of Nebraska at Omaha has been fined $900 for false alarms at Baxter Arena, which has been open to the public for less than a year.

University spokesman Charley Reed said that “fire-alarm sensitivity has been an issue at Baxter since it has opened” but also says they’ve been infrequent. City records say there have been five false alarms since September 2015.

Associate athletic director Mike Kemp says the problem occurs when the scoreboard is moved up and down. He says the university will get the problem resolved.

City Treasurer Donna Waller says no fines were issued for the first two false alarms. False alarms on Oct. 5 and Jan. 22 drew $200 fines. A fifth alarm on April 13 cost the university $500.

Public defender says Nebraska should decriminalize pot

marijuana-jailOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Lancaster County’s public defender says Nebraska ought to decriminalize marijuana and regulate its distribution.

Joe Nigro said at a Thursday forum in Omaha that he’s not advocating the use of marijuana. But he says prohibition has failed and that the state’s criminal justice system shouldn’t be treating a health issue.

The forum was hosted by the National Association of Social Workers’ Nebraska chapter.

Nigro also criticized state Attorney General Doug Peterson for continuing to pursue legal action with Oklahoma against Colorado over its marijuana policies. Peterson had left the forum before Nigro’s remarks, but Peterson later defended the lawsuit, saying in an email that the effort is backed by all nine former administrators of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that the medical examiner’s office in Sioux Falls says the body was that of 23-year-old Tom Patterson. He disappeared in the water around 5 p.m. Sept. 4 near a beach about four miles southwest of Elk Point. Authorities have said witnesses reported that Patterson was trying to help some companions swim from the Nebraska shoreline back to South Dakota when he was swept away by the current.

Patterson was from Frostburg, Maryland, and was a student at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.

Colorado man faces 2 charges in Nebraska explosives case

jailSIDNEY, Neb. (AP) — A 51-year-old Colorado man is facing explosives charges in western Nebraska.

Nebraska prosecutors say Edgar Almond, of Loveland, Colorado, is charged with unlawful possession of explosives and possession of a destructive device. His attorney declined to comment Friday. Almond’s next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 27.

Sidney police say his wife reported Wednesday that he’d detonated a bomb in the area the night before and that he had bomb-making materials in his vehicle in front of her house. After he was arrested outside the home, police searched his van. Officers say they found bomb materials inside. A bomb fragment also was found in the area.
