Thomas Knapp

A 27-year-old North Platte man is facing sexual assault charges after he allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

On August 10, at around 2:00 a.m., a woman contacted police regarding a relationship her teenage daughter was in with an older man.

The mother told police that she learned about the relationship and suspected that her daughter and Thomas Knapp may have had sexual intercourse.

According to Investigator John Deal, the teen was interviewed and admitted that she and Knapp had sex at a residence in the 200 block of South Chestnut Street.  Deal says officers were able to obtain evidence that supported the allegation against Knapp.

Later in the day, officers made contact with Knapp at the residence on South Chestnut and questioned him.  Deal said Knapp exhibited suicidal behavior and,  as a result, was placed in emergency protective custody and was taken to Great Plains Health for an evaluation.

On August 12, Knapp was released from GPH and taken into custody.  He was jailed and charged with felony 1st-degree sexual assault of a child.

Nebraska law prohibits anyone 19-years-old or older from having sexual intercourse with anyone under the age of 16.

Bond for Knapp has been set at ten percent of $250,000.

Ardith Ann Woolson

woolson

Ardith Ann Woolson, age 86, of North Platte, NE, entered into Heaven’s Pearly Gates and was reunited once again with her husband, Walter Woolson, on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.

Ardith was born December 18, 1929, to William H. and Clara A. Meyer Victor at Wakefield, NE, where she grew up. Ardith graduated from Wakefield High School then went on to Wayne State College where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education and eventually earned her Masters Degree in Education.

On July 17,1954, Ardith was united in marriage to Walter E. Woolson in Wakefield, NE, and their love continued for over 60 years. The couple settled in North Platte where Ardith was a long time teacher in the North Platte School System before retiring in 1991. She was an inspiration for all the children she taught during her 32 years as a teacher. She related many stories of the kids she knew and cared about each one as her own.

Ardith was also an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and volunteered at the hospital. She loved to golf and travel and after they retired, Ardith and Walt did quite a bit of both.

Not only was she a caring teacher, Ardith was a Godly, wonderful, loving grandma. She introduced all her grandchildren to The Letter People, Skip-Bo and Rummikub, and gave each one unconditional support, love and thrifty values. Grandma never met a piece of tin foil that couldn’t be salvaged or a container that couldn’t hold her delicious iced tea. The older the kids got the more they appreciated all the things she taught them throughout the years. Grandma loved all of her grandchildren very much and was supportive of their activities from Job’s Daughters, to countless sporting events, to endless card games late into the night. She was always there for her grandkids.

She is survived by her son, Al Woolson, of North Platte; granddaughters, Lisa (Jeff) Hernandez, of Flowery Branch, GA, and Jennifer Cole and Haley Tinney, of Scottsbluff, NE; great-grandchildren, Joseph Orozco, Trysten and Emily Reyes, Gregory and Owyn Beverley, and Zoe and Axel Tinney; as well as other family members.

Ardith was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, in 2015; her parents, William and Clara Victor; and her brothers and sisters.

As to Ardith’s wishes, she too donated her body to science. Services will be held at a later date and inurnment will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. Memorials are suggested to your favorite charity in Ardith’s memory. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.

2 Nebraskans die in vehicle crash in Northwest Oklahoma

oklahoma-highway-patrolWOODWARD, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says two Nebraskans were killed in a single-vehicle crash in northwestern Oklahoma.

The OHP says 27-year-old Javier Salas Adame of Crete and 23-year-old Mariano Torrero Ortiz of Lincoln died Saturday in the crash on Highway 34 north of Woodward.

An OHP report says the two were in a pickup truck driven by Adame and towing a vehicle on a dolly when the dolly began to swerve. The report says the pickup then went out of control and rolled twice, throwing both Adame and Ortiz from the truck.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. A third man in the truck was treated and released at a hospital.

The report says the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the crash.

New Whiteclay ideas taking shape, but some not satisfied

whiteclay-neLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A new effort to reduce violence and panhandling in Whiteclay is slowly taking shape, but some people say they won’t be satisfied until the tiny Nebraska village stops selling beer near an Indian reservation plagued by alcoholism.

Activists who want to close the town’s four beer stores said they’re grateful that lawmakers and Gov. Pete Ricketts are trying to address the problems. However, they argue that some of the new proposals would force local or state taxpayers to pay for a situation caused by the stores.

Whiteclay sold the equivalent of 3.5 million cans of beer last year despite having a dozen residents. The northwest Nebraska village sits on the border of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where alcohol is banned but alcohol-related problems are rampant.

Several new exhibits are planned for this year’s state fair

state-fair-genericGRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — Several new exhibits are planned for this year’s Nebraska State Fair to teach visitors more about the state’s crops and soil.

The exhibits continue to grow at the fairgrounds in Grand Island that first opened in 2010. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has built a new elevated sky fort, and a new exhibit of different soil types has been added.

The Commission’s Christy Rasmussen says the wooden fort will remind people of a tree house.

Another new exhibit will display four different soil types found in Nebraska. And several new crops that are grown in the state have been planted at the fairgrounds.

This year’s state fair runs from Aug. 26 through Sept. 5.
