Mentoring programs help young Nebraska hunters learn more

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Two different mentoring programs will be offered again this fall to help young Nebraska hunters learn more about the sport.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says both programs will pair recent graduates of hunter education courses with mentors who can teach them more.

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever offers one program for hunters ages 12 to 15, so they can learn shooting and hunting techniques.

The second program for hunters ages 12 to 17 focuses on bow hunting with programs near Omaha, Lincoln, Ashland, Plattsmouth and Grand Island.

More details about both programs are available online at https://outdoornebraska.gov/mentoredhunts.

Former nebraska teacher takes plea deal in locker room camera case

LOUP CITY, Neb. (AP) — A former Loup City teacher accused of placing spy cameras in a girls locker room has made a plea deal on three counts and awaits a judge’s decision on a fourth.

On Thursday 25-year-old Anthony Rahe pleaded no contest to felony unlawful intrusion, misdemeanor unlawful intrusion and felony possession of a visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct. A brief, nonjury trial was held on a fourth charge: felony manufacture of visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct. The judge’s decision won’t come until after closing arguments or briefs are submitted.

Prosecutors dismissed or amended the original 15 counts against Rahe in return for his pleas.

District officials say a student reported finding the camera at Loup City Public School on Oct. 8. Investigators have said school security camera footage implicated Rahe.

Banks say Nebraska farmers struggle to repay loans

agricultureOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City say more borrowers raising livestock and row crops in Nebraska and surrounding states are struggling to repay loans as commodity prices stay low.

Bankers surveyed for the regional Fed’s latest report on agricultural credit conditions indicated continued problems in the second quarter.

More lenders reported a growth in the volume of borrowers with repayment problems as well as a higher number of denied loan applications compared to last year.

Nebraska bankers say they haven’t denied more loans to borrowers, but that financial situations are definitely getting tighter.

Todd Adams, chief executive of Adams Bank & Trust in Ogallala, says it’s concerning that borrowers haven’t been profitable for two years in a row.

Toyota recalls older models with recurring suspension issues

toyota-featureDETROIT (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling 337,000 vehicles for a third time.

The recall involves the Toyota RAV4 SUV from the 2006-2011 model years and the Lexus HS250h sedan from the 2010 model year.

Toyota first recalled the vehicles in 2012 because of a wobbly rear suspension. The company recalled them again in 2013 because the nuts it used to adjust the rear wheel alignment weren’t tightened properly.

This time, Toyota found that rust can form on the suspension arm threads if the nuts for the rear wheel alignment weren’t tightened correctly. If that happens, the suspension arm could separate from the vehicle and cause the driver to lose control.

Toyota will contact owners and replace both rear suspension arm assemblies for free.

Kansas governor wants to examine amusement park regulation

Schlitterbahn-Water-ParkTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback says he wants the state to review its regulation of amusement rides following a 10-year-old boy’s death at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City, Kansas.

Brownback told reporters Friday that he’s hoping state legislators spend significant time examining the state’s law on amusement parks.

He said, “I think that all needs to be looked at now in light of this tragedy.”

Kansas requires operators of permanent rides to “self-inspect” their rides at least once a year and maintain records. The state Department of Labor randomly audits those records, but Schlitterbahn’s documents hadn’t been audited for four years.

Caleb Thomas Schwab died Sunday while riding what is billed as the world’s tallest waterslide. He was the son of state Rep. Scott Schwab.

Judge rules Lincoln to pay medical fees from officer injury

judgeshipLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A district judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the city of Lincoln against Lancaster County seeking to cover medical expenses stemming from a friendly punch between officers nearly three years ago.

The order said that a sheriff’s deputy hit a Lincoln police officer working light duty on the left shoulder as he greeted her. The deputy didn’t know she had recently had rotator cuff surgery.

Nebraska’s Workers Compensation Court then ruled the city owed the officer more than $63,000 for medical expenses and restitution.

The city sued the county in May 2015, saying the deputy was negligent and failed to recognize that physical contact might hurt the officer.

Lancaster County District Judge Jodi Nelson ruled Tuesday the deputy’s punch constituted battery not negligence under state tort law.

Rope team rescues exhausted man from top of water tower in Franklin

firedptFRANKLIN, Neb. (AP) — Firefighters and members of a volunteer rope team have helped rescue a worker from a water tower in south-central Nebraska.

The South Central Rope Team deployed two volunteers using ropes and harnesses to lower the unidentified man to safety on the ground. Medics examined him at the scene five miles south of Franklin, and he was not taken to a hospital.
