LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln bank branch employee is suspected of stealing more than $74,000 from a customer’s account.

Online court records say 24-year-old Holliann Casey is charged with felony theft. On Thursday jail records said Casey remained in custody. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment for her. Casey’s next court hearing is set for Aug. 31.

Police say suspicious transactions prompted an audit of the customer’s account at the Pinnacle Bank branch. Police say the audit showed Casey withdrew $74,150 from the account between Oct. 27, 2014, and Aug. 1, 2016.

Authorities say the bank has reimbursed the customer.

Police: NP woman lied about being stabbed by boyfriend

Stephanie Hill

A confusing a chaotic turn of events in North Platte on Wednesday afternoon ended with the alleged victim in jail for lying to police.

At around 2:15 p.m., on August 10, officers responded to a disturbance in the 2600 block of West 19th Street.

According to Investigator John Deal, officers arrived and found a woman who had a scrape on her leg and  a small laceration on her arm.  She told police that her boyfriend had stabbed her during an altercation.  Deal said the woman, identified as 40-year-old Stephanie Hill, aka Stephanie Soto, admitted that she and the alleged suspect had begun drinking vodka very early in the day. Deal said Hill appeared to be intoxicated.

A short time later, the alleged suspect arrived at the scene and told officers that he had gone to get bandages and disinfectant for Hill’s injuries.  He told police that Hill had fallen near a camper and denied causing any of the injuries she sustained.

After further questioning of Hill by investigators, Deal says it became apparent that her story was inconsistent and that her injuries were not consistent with being stabbed or cut with a knife.  Another witness told investigators that Hill had simply fallen because she was intoxicated.

At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that Hill had made up the story about being stabbed.  After receiving treatment at Great Plains Health, Hill was placed under arrest and charged with false reporting.

She was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Brand Committee director resigns, rehired for new post

nebraska-brand-committeeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The executive director of a Nebraska agency that inspects cattle and investigates missing and stolen livestock has resigned, but will continue to work for the organization under a different title.

Shawn Harvey resigned Monday as the director of the Nebraska Brand Committee. His resignation follows a July 26 report from the Nebraska State Auditor’s Office questioned management practices of the committee and focused on actions by Harvey. The report accused him of using a state vehicle for personal trips and questioned other incidents.

While the committee’s board accepted Harvey’s resignation, it rehired him for the newly-created position of chief investigator and director of field operations for the same salary he had made as executive director: $72,000.

Teachers role play impoverished students, learning empathy

schoolLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — More than 70 Lefler school district educators recently participated in a role-play event hosted by the Food Bank of Lincoln to experience the kind of poverty that 56 percent of their students live every day.

Lefler is the first school to go through the simulation. Organizers hope other schools will soon do the same.

Lefler Principal Jessie Carlson had his staff participate in the exercise as part of a five-year effort to reduce the gap in both achievement and discipline rates for students living in poverty.

Teachers said the exercise put them in the shoes of struggling children and teens, and gave them a new perspective on why parents aren’t involved at school, and why kids act out, or forget their pencils.

New Girls Scout cookie revealed

smores-cookieAugust 10 is National S’mores Day, and the perfect time to announce that the Girl Scouts have added a new variety to their cookie line-up: Girl Scout S’moresTM.

When you think of S’mores, you think of Girl Scouts. As far back as the early 1920s, the tradition of making and enjoying S’mores has been a staple of their outdoor experiences. Many a marshmallow has been slow- roasted and smooshed onto a bar of chocolate between two graham crackers around a Girl Scout campfire.
The new, S’mores-inspired Girl Scout Cookie is a clever take on the time-honored campfire treat. It is one more delicious way for consumers to support Girl Scouts in their community and the positive impact girls are making with their cookie proceeds.

Girl Scout S’moresTM will be available in Nebraska when girls begin their Girl Scout Cookie Program sales on Friday, February 3, 2017.

Girl Scouts also reminds girls, parents, volunteers and community leaders that it is time to join and have S’more fun than ever imagined.

At around 2:15 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the 2600 block of West 19th Street.

Officers made contact with an adult female who said she had been stabbed, however, police say they are unable to verify that at this time.  Investigator John Deal said she was transported to Great Plains Health with minor injuries, but did not elaborate on exactly how she was injured.

Deal said officers are currently interviewing several subjects, including the victim, who were present when the altercation occurred.

At this time, investigators say it is too early in the investigation to say whether any criminal charges will be filed.  Deal said there is no threat to the public, and police believe that all individuals involved have been contacted by law enforcement.

More information will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.  The names of those involved have not been released.  No arrests have been reported.
