Activists: Enforce law in Whiteclay or close beer stores

whiteclay-neLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Advocates who want to end beer sales in Whiteclay are calling on state officials to enforce liquor laws in the Nebraska town or revoke the licenses of its four beer stores.

The group said in a statement Tuesday that Nebraska needs to provide adequate law enforcement if the stores are allowed to remain open.

The stores sold the equivalent of 3.5 million beer cans last year despite having a dozen residents. It’s located on the border of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where alcohol is banned but alcohol-related problems run rampant.

A task force formed at Gov. Pete Ricketts’ urging has suggested possible solutions, including more law enforcement.

Whiteclay activist John Maisch, who produced a documentary about the town, says closing the stores is the cheapest option for taxpayers.

2 riders say Kansas waterslide had loose straps

Schlitterbahn-Water-ParkAt least two people who’ve ridden the waterslide on which a 10-year-old boy was killed over the weekend say shoulder straps snapped or popped off during the ride in Kansas City, Kansas.

Paul Oberhauser told local television station KCTV that the safety restraints on his raft on the Verruckt waterslide weren’t working properly when he rode it on July 26 at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark.

The Nebraska man says his shoulder strap “busted loose” during the ride and he “just held on.” A video shot by his wife shows it loose at the ride’s end. He says he told workers about the loose strap.

Kenneth Conrad told WDAF-TV that he rode the waterslide last year with a friend whose shoulder strap came “completely off.” Conrad’s wife snapped a photo at the end of the ride showing the strap missing. Conrad says he didn’t file a complaint with the park.

The park’s spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a message Tuesday from The Associated Press seeking comment on the claims.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Lincoln man who was given a rare chance with probation when he was 14 has been sentenced to prison for violating it by attempting to break into a business.

19-year-old Deanta Delarosa pleaded guilty in May to attempted burglary after he got caught trying to break into a business in July 2015. At the time, Delarosa was still on probation for a robbery he committed in December 2011.

On Monday, Lancaster County District Judge John Colborn revoked Delarosa’s probation, sentenced him to four to six years in prison for the original robbery and gave him another 18 months to two years for the new charge.

Delarosa already has credit for nearly two years in jail and will have to serve about 10 months before he’s eligible for parole.

OSHASCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — Federal safety officials have begun investigating a worker’s fall at a construction site in Scottsbluff.

The fall occurred at a Western Sugar Cooperative facility. Initial reports are that the worker fell through a floor opening on the second floor and was hospitalized.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration says the worker is an employee of DSI Mechanical. DSI is part of Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Design Solutions & Integration.

DSI attorney Aaron Dean says DSI is investigating Wednesday’s accident and looks forward to cooperating with OSHA. He also says DSI employees have all completed 10-hour OSHA construction safety courses that include fall protection.

Dean says he can’t release the worker’s name but says he’s recovering at a Scottsbluff medical facility.

Omaha man suspected of poisoning 4 cottonwoods near his home

odd-newsOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — An Omaha man has been arrested, accused of poisoning four giant city-owned cottonwood trees near his home.

Court records say 44-year-old Donald Grenawalt is charged with felony criminal mischief. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call Tuesday from The Associated Press.

Four or five holes had been drilled into each tree trunk, and officials suspect poison was poured into the holes. The city has estimated the cost to remove each dying tree and plant a new one at $3,000 to $5,000.

Court records say Grenawalt told a city employee who knew him that he’d attacked the trees because he was sick of them. The documents say investigators found drills and bits at Grenawalt’s home and chemicals that could have been poured into the trees.
