US approves GMO mosquito test, but no release imminent

mosquitoMIAMI (AP) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is giving final approval for a field trial releasing genetically modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys.

The FDA said Friday in a statement that after considering thousands of public comments, its Center for Veterinary Medicine concluded the proposal from biotech firm Oxitec would not significantly affect the environment.

No mosquitoes will be released immediately. Keys officials will hold a nonbinding vote on the proposal for residents in November.

Oxitec releases nonbiting male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes modified with synthetic DNA to produce offspring that die outside a lab. The method aims to reduce mosquito populations that spread Zika and other viruses.

Brazil and the Cayman Islands are releasing Oxitec’s insects. The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District wants to test them on an island north of Key West.

Trial won’t be moved in Nebraska woman’s child death case

Carla Montoya

NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — The trial of a Norfolk woman accused of causing her daughter’s death won’t be moved.

Court records say Judge James Kube denied a motion Tuesday by Carla Montoya for a change of venue. The motion said media coverage and online comments by potential jurors would prevent Montoya from having a fair trial in Madison County. Kube disagreed.

The judge did, however, granted a motion to discard statements Montoya made during the first of three police interviews. Her motion said she was not read a warning about her rights during that interview, as she should have been. The judge agreed. He rejected her motion to suppress statements from the other interviews.

Montoya’s pleaded not guilty to intentional child abuse resulting in death. Her trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 12.

A 36-year-old North Platte man has been jailed after he allegedly sexually assaulted a child as they slept.

According to Investigator John Deal, on August 4 at around 6:41 p.m.,  officers met with a juvenile and their mother at the police department regarding an alleged sexual assault.  Deal said the alleged assault occurred at a residence in the 700 block of South Sycamore Street.

The juvenile told officers that they had been sleeping in their bedroom early on the morning of August 2, when they awoke to find Dennis Nash, their mother’s live-in boyfriend, performing oral sex on them.

Officers searched the residence where the alleged offense occurred and, according to Deal, found evidence that corroborated the victim’s account.

Officers made contact with Nash and conducted an interview.  It was determined that there was probable cause to arrest Nash and charge him with 1st-degree sexual assault.

Police did not reveal the age or sex of the alleged victim but stated that they were under 16.

Nash was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.  He’s being held without bond.

Boys reach safety after rainstorm runoff sweeps them away

lincoln-policeLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say residents rescued one boy and four others escaped by themselves after being swept away by rainstorm runoff in Lincoln.

Four boys playing in a culvert were carried away Thursday evening when the water rose to their waists. Lincoln police say three got out after only a few yards but the fourth boy was taken about two blocks before he made it out of the water.

In a separate incident, two neighbors rescued a boy who’d been swept away when he tried to pick up a nickel he’d spotted on the ground.

Authorities say none of the boys required medical treatment.

AURORA, Neb. (AP) — A November trial has been scheduled for a Nebraska man who police say was recruited to kill another man’s wife.

Court records say 30-year-old Derrick Shirley, of Bradshaw, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Hamilton County District Court in Aurora. He’s charged with conspiracy to commit murder. His trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 28.

Nebraska State Patrol investigators say 38-year-old Robert Honken paid Shirley $400 to kill Honken’s wife. They say Shirley did surveillance around the woman’s Hamilton County home but never tried to kill her.

Honken has pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities say he also tried to hire another person, but that man turned out to be an undercover officer.

Honken’s trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 14.

Nebraska officials looking to improve business incentives

taxesASHLAND, Neb. (AP) — State officials say they’re looking to improve and expand the Nebraska Advantage Act, which gives qualified businesses state incentives.

Gov. Pete Ricketts said Thursday that Nebraska Department of Economic Development Director Courtney Dentlinger and other state officials are meeting with Chambers of Commerce and businesses across the state to brainstorm different ideas to keep businesses in the state and attract additional ones.

The incentives are based on the dollar amount of investment in Nebraska and number of jobs created, starting at $1 million in new investment and 10 new jobs.

Businesses are offered a wage credit and partial refund of sales taxes paid on qualified capital purchases. They can also be granted personal property exemptions for things such as ag-processing machinery and planes.

Omaha pedestrian bridge gets $300K needed for renovation

omahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Donors have pledged $150,000 needed to renovate and restore a historic pedestrian bridge in Omaha.

City Councilman Pete Festersen and local resident Nick Manhart announced the donations for the Dodge Street pedestrian bridge Wednesday. Festersen thanked Manhart and his fellow Friends of the Bridge advocates for securing the more than 100 donations.

Combined with $150,000 in city bridge maintenance funds, the donations hit the total of $300,000 needed to finish the project. Construction will be completed as soon as 2017 in time for the green, curvy span’s 50th birthday in 2018.

The bridge connects two local parks and provides a safe passage across Dodge Street for cyclists, walkers and students of the nearby University of Nebraska at Omaha and St. Margaret Mary campuses.
