Nebraska woman accused of kidnapping son from hospital takes deal

MADISON, Neb. (AP) — A woman accused of kidnapping her newborn son from a Norfolk hospital has taken a plea deal.

Court records say 34-year-old Lacee Tuttle, of Pierce, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Madison County District Court to felony violation of a child custody order and misdemeanor child abuse or neglect. Prosecutors dropped a kidnapping count in exchange for Tuttle’s pleas. Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 24.

Authorities say she took her 2-day-old son from Faith Regional Health Services on July 10, triggering a statewide Amber Alert. The baby and Tuttle were found hours later.

Authorities say Tuttle tested positive for methamphetamine and marijuana while at the hospital, which is why custody was given to a state agency.

WALNUT, Iowa (AP) — A highway bridge in western Iowa has been dedicated as a memorial to a slain Omaha police officer.

The Interstate 80 bridge that carries traffic into Walnut has been named the Kerri Orozco Bridge. A scholarship fund also was announced at the bridge dedication ceremony Tuesday.

Orozco was fatally wounded on May 20, 2015, when Marcus Wheeler opened fire on officers who were trying to arrest him. Wheeler was killed when another officer returned fire. Orozco was one day away from going on maternity leave to care for the daughter she had delivered prematurely three months earlier.

Orozco and her family lived in Council Bluffs, and she was a native of Walnut.

Omaha college board chairman steps down from post

metro-community-college-updOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The chairman of the Omaha community college board has stepped down from the position but is still resisting calls for his resignation from the board.

Fred Conley resigned the chairmanship of the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors at a special meeting Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Education has threatened to withhold student aid and other federal funding from the college if Conley remains on the board because the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued an order prohibiting the federal government from doing business with Conley. HUD officials have said Conley didn’t disclose a potential conflict of interest while serving on the Omaha Housing Authority board.

The college board voted July 26 to ask Conley to leave the board. He’s refused but has said he won’t seek re-election.

Lincoln prison placed on lockdown after inmates refuse orders

ne-state-penLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Prisons officials say staff members at the Nebraska State Penitentiary have regained control of a group of inmates who refused orders to return to their living quarters.

A statement from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says the prison is on lockdown status after the incident Tuesday evening.

According to the statement, a group of inmates who had been ordered to return to their housing unit from the dining hall refused to leave a yard. A group of inmates “converged on staff” and inmates throughout the facility “became defiant” and “verbally aggressive.”

Warden Rich Cruickshank says staff regained control and secured the facility. The statement says no staff or inmates were injured.

The facility will be on lockdown status while the incident is investigated.

GM, Ford say July US sales fell

fordDETROIT (AP) — U.S. auto sales were expected to drop slightly in July as unusually hot weather kept buyers indoors.

Kelley Blue Book predicted a 1 percent decline from last July to about 1.5 million vehicles, while auto pricing site TrueCar.com expected sales to be flat for the month. TrueCar said some automakers offered big discounts to help beat the heat.

General Motors’ sales fell 2 percent while Ford’s U.S. sales fell 3 percent. Both automakers reported declines in pickup truck sales, their best-sellers, but strong sales of big SUVs. Sales of the Ford Expedition more than doubled, while sales of the GMC Yukon were up 32 percent.

Other automakers will report sales later Tuesday.

Starbucks recalls stainless-steel straws on reports of cuts

starbucks-coffeeSEATTLE (AP) — Starbucks is recalling stainless-steel straws it sold in its stores and online after three reports of children suffering “mouth lacerations” while using them.

The Seattle-based company says about 2.5 million of the straw sets were sold in the U.S., and 301,000 were sold in Canada. The straws have a ridge at the bottom that keeps them attached to beverage lids.

Starbucks says people should not let children use the straws, which are rigid and can pose an injury risk.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says the straws were sold between June 2012 and this past June. They cost about $6 for a set of three straws. Cups for the straws were sold for between $11 and $30. The straws were made in China and imported by Starbucks Corp.
