BREAKING: Wallace Bank Robber Escapes from McCook Work Ethics Camp

One of the men convicted in the botched robbery of Farmer’s State Bank in Wallace has escaped from the Work Ethics Camp in McCook.

According to reports, Drew Steier escaped on Friday evening, and may have stolen a vehicle from McCook.

Steier was sentenced to one and a half to three years in prison in April for his role in the botched robbery.

Steier entered the bank and brandished a fake gun, then demanded money.  Employees of the bank noticed the firearm was a fake, and refused to give Steier any money.

No further information on his possible destination or any other details of the escape were immediately available.

Former Lexington Cop Charged with Multiple Crimes

lexington-police(AP) — A former Lexington police officer has been arrested on a warrant charging him with burglary, criminal trespass and official misconduct.

49-year-old Terrance Smith was arrested at his home Wednesday. His bond was set at $500. The case was investigated by Nebraska State Patrol and is being prosecuted by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

Smith is accused of entering Landmark Implement near Lexington after business hours on May 19, while on duty and without a law enforcement purpose. Landmark is just outside of the Lexington patrol jurisdiction. Suspicion about Smith entering the business was reported to the police department on June 7, and Smith was fired three days later.

A public phone listing for Smith could not be found.

Fire Destroys South-Central NE Home

fire(AP) — An early-morning fire has destroyed a home in south-central Nebraska.

The fire was reported around 1 a.m. Friday in Orleans. The home was engulfed when firefighters arrived. Authorities say 18 firefighters from Orleans and Alma fought the blaze until it was under control around 3 a.m.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters remained on scene with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal until 6 a.m. The cause of the blaze hasn’t been determined, and authorities say the home is a total loss.

NE Tree Experts Warn of Pine Wilt Disease

pine-wilt-disease(AP) — The Nebraska Forest Service is warning about a tree disease that is spreading from the eastern part of the state.

Experts say pine wilt preys on the water flow of Scots and Austrian pines, and is caused by a worm-like pest called a nematode. Experts say the disease affects non-native pines in Nebraska.

Pine wilt was first identified in Missouri in the 1970s and has spread from southeastern Nebraska to the rest of the state. While less common northwest of Kearney and Norfolk, the disease has been reported as far west as Scottsbluff.

Mark Harrell of the Nebraska Forest Service says the disease can kill susceptible trees quickly.

Kearney Police Warn of Internet/Phone Scams

Kearney_police(AP) — Police in Kearney say they’ve received multiple complaints about telephone and internet scams involving health related issues.

Police say recent complaints have involved phone callers who try to collect banking and other personal information from residents.

The callers offer to assist with claim filings or applications for Medicare or Medicaid, and ask for the personal information near the end of the conversation.

Authorities say a request for personal information is a warning sign of possible fraud.

UNMC Study Shows Peanuts Cause Most Severe Allergic Reaction in Children

UOFNMEDICALCENTERRaise your hand if you like peanut butter. Most of us raise our hands, but some are forced to keep theirs down. They’re allergic.

Food allergies affect nearly 10 percent of children younger than 4-years-old, and the peanut allergy causes the most severe reactions. Exposure to even trace quantities of peanuts can lead to a fatal reaction called anaphylaxis, causing breathing problems and heart arrhythmias that can lead to sudden death.

Only 20 percent of kids grow out of it, so if it’s not you, chances are someone around you deals with a peanut allergy. There are more people with peanut allergies than ever before. Rather than make jokes about those missing the joy of PB&J, let’s see what we can do to help.

Paranoid over Peanuts. Thanks to George Washington Carver (who found 300 new uses for the legume) we now have peanuts everywhere, and some sufferers aren’t sure how close in contact they can get.

Thirty kids, ranging from 4 to 15, with documented peanut allergies were challenged by casual exposure to peanut butter. Their previous reactions stemmed from being kissed by someone who ate peanut butter, being near PB&J sandwiches, even being exposed to peanut breath.

In the study, dishes were prepared with a scoop of peanut butter and placed alongside tuna and mint extract to hide the peanut odor. Other dishes replaced the peanut butter with soy butter as a placebo test. The dishes were covered with gauze and held to the kids’ noses for 10 minutes. For an hour, they were watched for reactions.

No one exposed to the peanut butter had a reaction. One person reported an itch on the roof of the mouth, but it was provoked by the placebo test and resolved spontaneously. Based on this, researchers found it unlikely that the smell of peanuts triggers an allergic reaction.

Another large study of 4,685 peanut-allergic individuals found only 1 percent reported reactions to airborne peanut dust, 91 percent reported ingestion was the culprit. This should be somewhat reassuring that the smell of peanuts is likely not harmful.

Butter Clean Up. A pinch of nuts on the tongue is enough to cause a reaction. The common peanut, Arachis hypogaea, has eight different protein allergens named after its scientific name, from Ara h1 to Ara h8. Some people are allergic to one, and some to all eight, so wiping up the peanut butter becomes important. A study showed liquid and bar soap cleans Ara h1 just fine, but antibacterial hand-sanitizer left traces on 6 of 12 hands. Most household cleaning agents were sufficient in cleaning tables.

Symptoms alert. Reactions typically occur within 20 minutes of exposure and can range from itchy skin (most common) to GI complaints (least common). Asthma reactions (coughing, wheezing) or anaphylaxis are the most serious. Ingesting nuts is the most common cause, and rarely does skin contact cause a problem.

A third of people will have a second reaction from the exposure 1-8 hours after the first reaction has resolved. Allergic people should wear Medicalert Bracelet and have injectable epinephrine readily available.

Paws-itive Partners Has Positive Effect on NP Cat Population

paws-itive-partnersIn mid-June, North Platte Animal Shelter was flooded with cats and kittens and faced with the dilemma of reducing numbers.  As an incentive to adopt from the shelter, Paws-itive Partners offered gift certificates for any cat or kitten adopted before July 1.  As a result, in just 10 days, gift certificates were provided with 31 cats and kittens being adopted into new homes.  New adoptive families are expected to use Paws-itive Partners’ spay and neuter gift certificates as soon as possible and at any veterinary clinic in the Lincoln County area.

Paws-itive Partners reminds pet owners, cats and dogs alike, to spay and neuter.   In the United States, millions of healthy cats and dogs are euthanized every year because there aren’t enough people who adopt.  Sterilization is the most humane and effective way to prevent pet over population and reduce euthanasia.

Paws-itive Partners member Susan Kubart reported that April 2013’s Love My Cat campaign was a howling success.  “We were able to help spay and neuter 354 cats!  We had such a great response from pet owners that clinics needed to extend April’s Love My Cat campaign into May to complete the surgeries,” Kubart said.  “We appreciate the clinics that are so supportive of our efforts and the media who helps us spread the word.  We can’t say enough good things about the clinics and media.  We wouldn’t be able to help so many people and pets without them,” Kubart said.  She hopes that with Paws-itive Partners, veterinary clinics and the media working together, someday euthanizing homeless pets in our area can become a thing of the past.

Oglala Sioux Tribal President to Discuss Alcohol Sales in NE

oglala-tribe(AP) — The president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe is scheduled to visit Lincoln next week to discuss alcohol sales in the Nebraska town of Whiteclay, on the border of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Tribal President Bryan Brewer will give a speech Sunday at Vine Congregational United Church of Christ in Lincoln. The 7 p.m. event is free and open to the public.

Organizers say Brewer is also planning to meet with Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman to talk about alcohol sales in Whiteclay. Activists say the town’s beer stores contribute to social problems on the officially dry reservation.

Last year, Brewer spoke at Chadron State College in northwest Nebraska about his plans to attract small businesses to the reservation while preserving the tribe’s Lakota language.
