$1 Million Mega Millions Winner Sold In Kimball

nebraska-lottery(AP) — Someone who bought a Mega Millons lottery ticket in the Nebraska Panhandle town of Kimball has won $1 million.

Nebraska Lottery spokesman Neil Watson said no one had stepped forward yet on Friday.

The ticket was bought on Sunday at Vince’s Corner gas station for Tuesday night’s drawing. It matched five of the six numbers for a $250,000 payout, but the buyer also bought a multiplier, so the prize was quadrupled to $1 million.

Store owner Henry Heeg told the Scottsbluff Star-Herald that he hopes the buyer lives locally, “so the money stays here in the Panhandle.”

Watson says the winner has 180 days to turn in the ticket at the Nebraska Lottery offices in Lincoln.

Economy Strong In Nebraska and Nine Other States

(AP) — The economy in rural areas of 10 Midwest and Plains states remains strong as healthy rainfall this spring helps crops get established.

The overall economic index for the region grew to 60.5 in June from May’s 58.8. That suggests growth in the months ahead.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the monthly survey, says the bankers are optimistic because of the consistent growth in the national economy and improving crop conditions.

The confidence index grew to 60 in June from May’s 54.5.

The indexes range from 0 to 100, with 50 representing growth neutral. Any score above 50 suggests economic growth in the months ahead.

The index is based on a survey of rural bankers in Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Drought of 2012 Still Taking a Toll On Nebraska Trees

dying-red-cedars(AP) — Forestry officials in western Nebraska say last year’s drought was so severe that trees are still struggling to survive, and many are succumbing to pests and disease.

Nebraska district forester Rachel Allison said Thursday that trees used for windbreaks and shade are continuing to die because of stress from last year’s extreme conditions. Allison, who is based in North Platte, says the drought was especially hard on spruce trees.

Galen Wittrock, assistant manager of the South Platte Natural Resources District, says he’s seen well-established trees die this year around Sidney, including drought-resistant red cedars.

Mark Harrell, the state’s forest health program leader, says trees in eastern Nebraska have fared better. But he warns that another dry summer could hinder the recovery.

Pony Express Riders Reach NE Panhandle

pony-express-ridersRiders retracing the route of the Pony Express galloped through the Nebraska Panhandle.

Riders who took part in the 33rd annual ride left the Scotts Bluff National Monument Thursday and headed toward the Nebraska-Wyoming state line at Henry.

The riders planned to end their day at Guernsey, Wyo., on Thursday evening.

The nonprofit National Pony Express Association organizes the 10-day, nearly 2,000 mile trip each year. About 700 riders started this year from St. Joseph, Mo., and planned to end in Sacramento, Calif.,

The original Pony Express operated for only 18 months, ending in 1861 as even the fastest riders couldn’t compete with the telegraph.

17 YO NP Teen Charged with Felony for Choking 12 YO

north_platte_patchA North Platte teen has been charged with a felony after he allegedly choked a 12-year-old.

At around 10:15 p.m. on June 15, North Platte Police Officers responded to the report of an assault in the area of Washington Elementary School.

Upon arrival, the victim told Police that a 17-year-old male has assaulted him by placing him in a headlock and choking him while the two were “hanging out” on the playground of the school.

On June 20, an Officer met with the suspect and determined there was probable cause to arrest the teen.

He was charged with Felony Simple Assault-Strangulation and 3rd Degree Assault.

The teen was processed at the Lincoln County Detention Center and released.

Sidney Residents to Vote on School Bond

school-bond-vote(AP) — A special election on a Sidney school bond measure has been scheduled.

The school board decided earlier this week that the election will be held Sept. 10. Voters will be deciding whether they want an elementary school built to replace Central, North and South elementary schools.

Details such as the new school’s location and the bond levy amount will be considered at a school board meeting on July 8.

Private Lake Owners in NE Can Apply for Fish

Nebraska_game_and_parksIndividuals and association who own private lakes and ponds can apply to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to have the water stocked with fish.

The agency says the bodies of water must have at least one-half surface acre and at least 25 percent must be at least 10 feet deep with water that has at least 12 inches of clarity. Fencing must be available if necessary to keep livestock out.

Most fish available for stocking are largemouth bass and bluegill fingerlings.

A Nebraska fishing permit is required of all those 16 and older who fishes bodies stocked by Game and Parks.

The application deadline is Aug. 1.

To download an application on the Internet, go to OutdoorNebraska.org and click on Fishing and then Services.

Officials Say NE Horse Disease Outbreak Hasn’t Spread

horse(AP) — The Nebraska state veterinarian says the outbreak of a deadly horse disease hasn’t been found in other herds that had contact with the initial herd.

Dr. Dennis Hughes said Wednesday that the herd in northwestern Cherry County remains quarantined and will undergo more tests over the next few months.

Earlier this month the Nebraska Agriculture Department began an investigation after 12 cases of equine infectious anemia were diagnosed in the herd. Ten of the 12 were euthanized because there are no treatment options. The department says the remaining two horses were taken to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa, for work related to the disease testing.

Experts say the disease affects only horses, mules and donkeys and is usually fatal. No other animals or humans can be infected.
