(AP) — A 6-year-old boy has been injured in a fire at an apartment on the southwest side of Kearney.

The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department says firefighters were dispatched around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday and had the flames under control about 15 minutes later.

The boy was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of a minor burn on one of his feet. The department says the boy’s 4-year-old brother started the fire on a blanket while playing with a lighter.

Smoke forced some residents of the apartment building to find other shelter for the night.

(AP) — Authorities have raised their forecast for Nebraska’s winter wheat crop, but the harvest still is expected to be the lowest since 1944.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s statistics service says that, based on June 1 conditions, Nebraska’s farmers are expected to harvest 45.5 million bushels. That’s up 6 percent from the May 1 forecast but down 15 percent from last year’s crop.

The yield forecast is 35 bushels an acre. That’s up 2 bushels from May but down 6 bushels from last year.

The acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 1.3 million acres, the same as last year.

A Hershey woman will spend nearly a year in jail for photographing her husband committing sexual assaults on children and failing to report the abuse.

39-year-old Deanna Fischer was sentenced Wednesday in Lincoln County Court to 364 days in jail for Sexual Assault of a Child and Child Abuse.

Fisher was convicted of the crimes in March.

Prosecutors say that in Feburary of 2004, Fisher’s husband Daniel, sexually abused several children.  They claim Fischer took photos of the assaults, and failed to report the abuse or take any steps to stop them.

Court records also say that Fischer inappropriately touched a child in December of 2006.

Daniel Fischer committed suicide while charges were pending against him.

Deanna Fischer must also register as a sex offender for 15 years.

 

A North Platte man is behind bars after he allegedly choked his girlfriend.

At around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, North Platte Police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 1100 Block of N. Bryan.

Upon arrival, Officers made contact with the victim, a 21-year-old Kearney woman, who told them that her boyfriend, 22-year-old Michael Butler, had assaulted and choked her.

Following an investigation, police determined there was probable cause to arrest Butler.

He was charged with 3rd Degree Domestic Assault and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

(AP) — Honda is recalling more than 18,000 cars in the U.S. to fix problems with the brakes.

The recall affects more than 13,000 Acura RSX compact cars from 2006 and the Honda S2000 sports car from the 2006 and 2007 model years.

Honda says some power brake booster parts weren’t made to specifications. That could cause a decrease in braking power over time and could increase the risk of a crash. But the company says it doesn’t know of any accidents or injuries from the problem.

Honda found the problem by watching warranty claims. Owners will be notified by mail in mid-July. Dealers will replace the brake booster if needed.

(AP) — As the debate over government surveillance rages on, there’s an assumption that young people will be the least concerned about privacy.

Turns out, many young people want to keep their personal information to themselves — in some cases, more than their elders.

That attitude showed up most recently in a poll done for the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press and The Washington Post.

Fifty-one percent of young adults, ages 18 to 29, said it was “more important for the federal government to investigate possible terrorist threats, even if that intrudes on personal privacy.”

But 45 percent said personal privacy was more important. That number compared with less than a third of adults, age 30 and older, who said the same.

(AP) — Nebraska is awarding $1.93 million in grants to support more than 100 tire recycling and cleanup projects throughout the state.

Department of Environmental Quality director Mike Linder says the grant money comes from a $1 fee for every new tire purchased in Nebraska. Nebraska residents generate more than 1.5 million scrap tires each year, according to the department.

The grants will reimburse individuals, groups and local governments for crumb rubber purchases. Linder says they will prevent public health and environmental problems by eliminating tire piles.

Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2014 is Gina Jespersen.

Jespersen, of Hemingford, was crowned at opening night of the Buffalo Bill Rodeo Wednesday.

Jespersen was competing for the title against Dakota Clough, Emily Taylor and Tashonna Frye and took the win in the categories of horsemanship, personality, appearance, speech and the written test.

Toshonna Frye won the congeniality award and former Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska, Dakota Clough, won the photogenic category.

Jespersen is an Early Childhood Education major at South Dakota State University, and said in an interview with The Post that she would someday like to teach Elementary School in a small community.

She will be the lady-in-waiting until January.

 

(AP) — An Oregon man suffered minor injuries when he crashed his plane at a northwest Nebraska airport.

The crash occurred a little before 7 a.m. Wednesday at Chadron Municipal Airport.

Chadron Police Chief Tim Lordino says 66-year-old William G. Earl, of Jacksonville, Ore., was attempting to take off when he had a mechanical problem with the cockpit canopy that caused the plane to nose back down onto the runway.

Earl’s plane skidded to a stop just off the main runway, sustaining significant damage.

Earl drove himself to a Chadron hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

There were no passengers in the plane.

Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating the accident.
