Gering Man Charged with Sending Lewd Messages to Young Girls

A 20-year-old Gering man has been charged with first-degree sexual assault of a minor after police say he sent lewd messages to young teenage girls.

Anthony Stricker also has been charged with two counts of enticement by electronic communication.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Stricker sent text messages to several young teens in March and April, asking the girls to send nude pictures of themselves and whether they were interested in having sex.

Troopers say the investigation showed Stricker had sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Stricker remained jailed Thursday and could not be reached for comment.

AAA Predicts Decline in Memorial Day Travel

aaaAAA Travel projects 34.8 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend which is down less than one percent compared to a year ago.

The holiday period is defined as Thursday, May 23, through Monday, May 27.   More than 89 percent, or 31 million people, will opt to drive to their destination.

Holiday air travel is expected to be down eight percent with some 2.3 million Americans flying during the 5-day holiday period.  The remaining 1.3 million travelers will use other modes of transportation such as rail, bus, or watercraft.

Roughly 14 percent of the population in the West North Central region, which includes Nebraska, is expected to travel this holiday period.

Those traveling by car are reminded to buckle-up, adhere to posted speed limits, and never drive after consuming alcohol.  More than 70 law enforcement agencies across Nebraska will invest extra hours in the statewide Click-it or Ticket special enforcement effort this holiday period.

NP/LCCVB Improvement Fund Grant Cycle Begins

lccvbSince its inception in 2006, the Improvement Fund of the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau has awarded nearly one million dollars to Lincoln County organizations for brick-and-mortar improvements and expansions to local attractions and visitor services. Due to the overwhelming number of applicants seeking these funds, the North Platte/Lincoln County Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Committee has added an intent to apply requirement to the application process.

An “intent to apply” in the form of a letter must be sent to the NP/LCCVB by July 1, 2013, stating an estimate of the amount to be requested in the grant application, the total project cost, a brief description of the proposed project and the organizations involved in the project. Organizations that do not submit an intent to apply will not be eligible for submitting an application for Improvement Funds. Qualified organizations are 501(c)3, not-for-profit, or divisions of local government.

Following a review of the intent to apply, the staff of the NP/LCCVB will schedule a meeting with potential applicants to discuss the project and determine if it is eligible for a “minor grant” application or a “major grant” application.

Minor grants are defined as those in which the entire project has a cost of less than $5,000, or the activity is in the nature of repairs or maintenance to existing facilities. Major grants are those in which the entire project has a cost of more than $5,000, or which involve new construction, whether as a new attraction or visitor service, or an expansion of an existing attraction or visitor service.

The intent to apply must be returned to the NP/LCCVB office byMonday, July 1, 2013. For those projects given approval to submit a full application, the application will be made available immediately upon approval, and the due date will be September 30. Organizations that do not submit an intent to apply or miss the deadline will not be able to submit a grant application for Improvement Funds.

NE Republicans Name New Executive Director

An experienced fundraiser and former executive director of two nonprofit Nebraska foundations has been named the new executive director of the Nebraska Republican Party.

Party officials announced Robert “Bud” Synhorst as the new director. State GOP Chairman J.L. Spray says Synhorst had been active in Republican politics for many years.

Synhorst is a past executive director of the Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation and formerly was executive director for the Metropolitan Community College foundation in Omaha. He also has served as athletic development officer at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Synhorst succeeds Jordan McGrain, who stepped down earlier this year as state Republican executive director.

Paxton Residents Told to Boil Drinking Water

boiling-waterPeople in Paxton are being told to boil their tap water before drinking it.

The village issued the notice to its residents this week after a water tower well failed to power up, drying up the tower.

Water has been pumped back into the tower, but officials must first receive the results of water samples taken from it before they can be sure the water is safe to drink.

Officials are hoping they have those results later this week.

Shugart Sentenced to Prison on Assault and Drug Charges

A 34-year-old North Platte man is going to prison after being sentenced on multiple drug and assault charges.

Quincey Shugart was sentenced to three to nine years in prison by Lincoln County District Court Judge Richard Birch on Monday.

Shugart was convicted of stabbing a 23-year-old man in the parking lot of La Casa Nueva last November.

A search of Shugart following his arrest also revealed that he was in possession of methamphetamine.

While out on bond, Shugart assaulted his new bride and picked up a domestic assault charge.

 

 

Hershey Man Pleads Not Guilty to Motor Vehicular Homicide

A 24-year-old Hershey man has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated in a crash that killed a woman.

Micah Koch entered the plea Monday in Lincoln County District Court.

Authorities say Koch was drunk when he crashed a pickup in January near Sutherland. The crash killed a passenger, 24-year-old Korey Huebner. Koch and another passenger, 28-year-old Jay Shotkoski, of Hershey, were injured.

Koch was ordered Monday to wear an electronic monitor on his ankle. His next court appearance is July 15th.

Members Sought for Five State Health Boards

nebraska-state-sealThe Nebraska State Board of Health is recruiting members to serve on five of its professional boards.

New professional members are required to be Nebraska residents who are actively engaged in practice, with a license in good standing. Residents who represent a consumer perspective may be eligible for the public member seats, if they are not licensed in the particular area that the board regulates.

The openings are on the boards of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Hearing Instrument Specialists, Massage Therapy, Medicine and Surgery and Physical Therapy.

The appointments are partial terms, due to resignations. Members are eligible to serve up to two full, five-year terms after they complete the partial term.

Game and Parks Launches Fishing Website

Nebraska_game_and_parksNebraska officials are using a new website to encourage more people to fish in the state.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the user-friendly website allows visitors to buy a fishing permit. It also provides blogs, stocking reports and instructional videos on fishing.

The website offers maps for trip planning, as well as information about family fishing events scheduled across the state throughout the summer.
