Great Plains Callahan Cancer Center Receives American College of Surgeons Accreditation

great_plainsGreat Plains Regional Medical Center’s Callahan Cancer Center has received its American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation along with CoC Outstanding Achievement Award. This accreditation is awarded to cancer care programs that have made a commitment to providing high quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient-centered care as demonstrated through compliance with the CoC accreditation standards.

Through this accreditation, the Callahan Cancer Center joins an elite group of approximately 1,500 other cancer care programs that have also gained this accreditation.

“This accreditation and award demonstrates the hard work and commitment our cancer center team exhibits on a daily basis,” said Kathy Feagler, director of the Callahan Cancer Center.

With the CoC accreditation, the Callahan Cancer Center can guarantee the highest quality of care because of the standards established by the CoC for cancer programs. According to facs.org/cancer, these standards include:

  • ·         Comprehensive care including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • ·         A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options
  • ·         Information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options
  • ·         Access to prevention and early detection programs, cancer education, and support services
  • ·         A cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up
  • ·         Ongoing monitoring and improvements in cancer care
  • ·         Quality care, close to home

The CoC Outstanding Achievement Award was given to a total of 79 accredited cancer programs throughout the United States in 2012. The goal of this award is to increase the awareness about quality care choices among cancer patients and their loved ones. The award recognizes top cancer programs that have achieved excellence in providing quality care for cancer patients.

“Everything we do is for our patients; we all strive to give them the best care possible, said Feagler, “With this accreditation we will be able to continually evaluate our performance and ensure that we continue to provide quality patient care.”

NP Businessman Arrested for Violating Protection Order, Twice

Robert Allberry
Robert Allberry

A North Platte businessman was jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center for violating a protection order twice in one day.

According to North Platte Police Department (NPPD) Public Information Officer Rodney Brown, an Officer responded to two separate reports of a male subject violating a Harassment Protection Order on Monday, May 13.

At around 11:00 a.m., police received a report from the victim who reported that Robert Allberry, 49, was yelling obscenities at her place of employment and causing a disturbance.

The Investigator found probable cause to cite Allberry for violating a protection order and issued a summons.

Later that same day, the victim reported to police that Allberry had contacted her via email.  Again, the Investigator found probable cause to cite Allberry, however, this time he was transported and jailed at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Violation of a Harassment protection order is a Class II misdemeanor.

Detention Center records indicate that Allberry is being held without bond.

Allberry is the owner of Computer Troubleshooters in North Platte.

Cell Phone Companies Join Together to Prevent Texting and Driving

texting-and-drivingThe country’s four biggest cellphone companies are set to launch their first joint advertising campaign against texting while driving, uniting behind AT&T’s “It Can Wait” slogan to blanket TV and radio this summer.

The multi-million dollar ad campaign is unusual not just because it unites rivals, but because it represents companies warning against the dangers of their own products. After initially fighting laws against cellphone use while driving, cellphone companies have begun to embrace the language of the federal government’s campaign against cellphone use by drivers.

Beyond TV and radio ads, the new campaign will stretch into the skies through displays on Goodyear’s three blimps. It will also include store displays, community events, social-media outreach and national tour of a driving simulator. The campaign targets teens in particular.

NE Farmers Working to Get Corn Crop Planted

CornNebraska farmers are working hard to plant their corn crop, but this spring’s wet weather has slowed their work.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says about 43 percent of Nebraska’s corn crop has been planted. That’s about 10 days behind the average of 77 percent planted at this point.

Nebraska’s wheat crop continues to be in bad shape. About 48 percent of the wheat crop is in poor or very poor condition. Only about 12 percent rates either good or excellent.

The state’s pastures haven’t grown much this spring, and most of the grazing land in the western half of the state is in bad shape.

Support Shown for Nebraska Death Penalty Repeal

NE Legislature
NE Legislature

A “test vote” in the Legislature suggests that a majority of Nebraska lawmakers want to abolish the death penalty, but there may not be enough support to overcome a filibuster.

Supporters of the repeal measure initiated the procedural vote on Monday to publicly gauge their backing. The vote suggests that 26 of the 49 state senators support the repeal, while 18 want to keep the death penalty in place. Five did not vote.

The vote came after roughly four hours of emotional debate. The repeal measure was introduced by longtime state Sen. Ernie Chambers, who has fought for decades to end capital punishment.

Lawmakers would need at least 30 votes to override Gov. Dave Heineman’s veto, and 33 to force an end to debate.

Healthcare Overhaul Could Cost Hospitals $500 Million in Funding

obama-approvedHospitals nationwide could lose half a billion dollars in federal funding meant to offset the cost of covering the uninsured next year. The loss that will be especially felt in states where lawmakers have decided against expanding Medicaid coverage.

According to rough estimates released Monday by federal health officials, cuts could jump to $4 billion in 2020,

Hospitals around the country that treat a large number of uninsured residents rely on federal funds to offset costs. But the Affordable Care Act assumes more residents will have health insurance and that hospitals will treat a smaller number of uninsured patients.

Fallen Nebraska Officers Remembered

ne-law-enforcement-memorialSpecial ceremonies are planned by law enforcement agencies across the state to mark National Police Week, May 12-18.

A statewide ceremony honoring the lives of the 134 officers who have died or been killed in the line of duty in Nebraska will be held today, Monday, May 13, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial located on the grounds of Fonner Park in Grand Island.

Nebraska District US Marshal Mark Martinez and Bishop James D. Conley of the Lincoln Diocese will be the featured speakers at the ceremony. Representatives from the Nebraska State Patrol, a well as, law enforcement personnel from agencies across the state will be in attendance.

“We are honored to be able to recognize the courage and dignity with which these officers served and to say thank you to their families,” said Colonel David Sankey, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol.  “This is also an opportunity to renew our dedication to public service as we vow to never forget the ultimate sacrifice paid by our fellow officers.”

The $400,000 Law Enforcement Memorial was paid for through the generosity of private donations. For more information on the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial and how you can contribute to its upkeep, visit the Nebraska Law Enforcement Memorial (NLEM) website at < https://www.nememorial.org >.

Nebraskans interested in finding out about additional Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremonies should contact their nearest Nebraska State Patrol Troop Area Headquarters or their local law enforcement agency.

Aid Available to Nonprofits That Transport the Elderly

NDORFederal grant money is available to nonprofits to transport elderly and disabled residents in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Department of Roads says the federal grant money is available to serve those residents in cases where mass transportation is unavailable or insufficient. The grants are only available to private nonprofits incorporated in Nebraska, such as nursing homes and hospitals.

The department must receive requests for application forms by 4:30 p.m. on May 24.

Nebraska’s Wind Power Continues to Lag Behind Iowa’s

wind-turbines(AP) — Nebraska’s wind power production continues to lag behind Iowa and other nearby states that offer better incentives.

Wind power development in Nebraska has been hurt because the state’s public utilities can’t qualify for the same incentives as private companies.

Critics say Nebraska should do more to encourage projects. Lawmakers are debating a couple bills to bolster Nebraska’s renewable energy incentives, but that might not be enough to make the state competitive.

Just last week, MidAmerican Energy Co. announced plans to invest another $1.9 billion in Iowa wind farms. Those projects could add as much as 1,050 megawatts of wind power.

The American Wind Energy Association says Iowa already leads the nation in wind power production. Nearly one-quarter of Iowa’s electricity comes from wind power.
