22-Year-Old Kearney Woman Charged with Felony Child Abuse

A 22-year-old Kearney woman has pleaded not guilty to two counts of felony child abuse.

Online court records say Brittney Schlund made the pleas on Tuesday in Buffalo County District Court.

Schlund and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Trey Tickle, were charged after Schlund’s 5-month-old daughter was hospitalized in January. Officials say the two reported the baby may have fallen out of her child swing, but doctors say the child’s injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome. Officials also say the baby tested positive for ingestion and exposure to methamphetamine.

Court records say Tickle pleaded not guilty on March 20 to four counts of felony child abuse and one felony count of drug possession.

Most Nebraska Government Offices Closed for Arbor Day

arbor-dayThose heading to state and local government offices on Friday will find most of them closed to observe Arbor Day.

The holiday is meant to encourage the planting and nurturing of trees. Many states around the country also recognize the holiday.

The tree-honoring occasion originated in Nebraska City in 1872, founded by Nebraska City native and U.S. Agriculture Secretary J. Sterling Morton. An estimated 1 million trees were planted that day.

Nebraska City residents will hold their 141st Arbor Day celebration Friday and will extend the festivities into Saturday and Sunday, with tree giveaways, a parade, races, home and garden and craft shows, a chili cook-off and commemorative tree plantings.

MCF and NEBRASKAland Days Bring World Class MMA to NP

Are you ready for war?

NEBRASKAland Days (NLD) and Midwest Championship Fighting (MCF) announced a partnership Thursday that will bring world-class Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to flatrock.

The event will be held during the NLD celebration.

MCF 7 Wild Wild West features a card that is sure to have MMA fans drooling and will surely create many new fans.

The card, orchestrated by Matchmaker Kelly Wiseman, is loaded with professional and amateur talent.

NLD Executive Director David said, “The addition of MCF 7 to our Celebration is a recognition of changing times.”  He added, “Consumers are looking for new and exciting events, and MCF certainly brings that to the table.”

MCF owner Russ Jones said, “MCF’s first event after being on hiatus for a long period of time was held on March 16 and was hugely successful.”

“NLD is an established event with a facility that lends itself well to spectator events.  We hope to continue to grow our events, and this venue allows us to do that,” Jones added.

Jones said the event will garner regional and national attention due to the caliber of fighters the event features.

There will be four scheduled professional bouts, with the Main Event featuring MCF Heavyweight Champ Rob Mitchell matched against Jose Beltran.  The card also includes several fighters who have fought in major promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator, and will also feature several women’s bouts.  The Ultimate Fighting Championship recently added female bouts to its events.

Additionally, the event will feature two four-man tournaments.

MCF 7 Wild Wild West will take place on Saturday, June 8 at 7 p.m, at the Wild West Arena, immediately after the NLD Opening Ceremonies, which begin at 4:45 and the Wild West Microfest which starts at 5:00 p.m.

There are several ticket options for the event ranging from 10-seat ringside tables for $450.00, to $20.00 grandstand seating.

Fudge says he and Jones both agreed that the event needed to be made affordable.

Tickets can be purchased at www.nebraskalanddays.com or at the NLD office at 509 E. 4th Street, Suite G.

Kearney High Student May Face Charges for Having a Knife in His Backpack

kearney-high-school(AP) — A Kearney High School student could face a weapons charge and expulsion for having a big knife in his backpack.

The school summoned medical help on Tuesday afternoon for an unresponsive student. Police say that during the incident, an officer searched the boy’s backpack and found the knife.

The teen wasn’t taken to a hospital and soon was released to his parents.

Police are asking Buffalo County prosecutors to charge the boy with having a concealed weapon on school property.

School district policy says students who take weapons onto school properties must be expelled.

Early Morning Crash in NP Sends Three to the Hospital

north_platte_patchAn accident at Philip and Cottonwood Wednesday morning sent three people to the hospital.

North Platte Police Department Public Information Officer, Rodney Brown, says that a 16-year-old male was driving a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he rear-ended a 1996 Chevy Blazer driven by 54-year-old Samuel Gilmore of North Platte at around 7:45 a.m.

Brown says the drivers were eastbound on Philip and were coming to a stop at a red light.  The Blazer left the road and stuck a concrete post in the Karl’s parking lot.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Grand Cherokee were taken to Great Plains Regional Medical center and treated for head injuries and lacerations.

Police believe the rising sun played a factor in the crash.

Game and Parks Deciding on Hunting Mountain Lions

mountain-liionThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission soon will be deciding whether to let people hunt mountain lions in the state.

The proposal to be considered at the commission’s May 24 meeting would allow a total of three the big cats to be taken over two short periods of one season in parts of the Nebraska Panhandle. One hundred permits would be issued by lottery to Nebraska residents and one through an auction also open to nonresidents.

Officials say mountain lions all but vanished from Nebraska by 1890. The cats have been making a comeback in the northwest corner of the state and have traveled as far east in Nebraska as Omaha. The commission estimates the Pine Ridge area has a population of 22 animals.

Illegal Firearm Possession Lands Montana Man in the Lincoln County Jail

Donald Stalkfleet

A Montana man found himself behind bars in Lincoln County following a traffic stop.

At around 2:30 am on Wednesday morning, a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a vehicle speeding on North Jeffers Street in North Platte.

A traffic stop was initiated at the intersection of Highway 30 and Hall School Road.  Deputies made contact with the vehicle’s driver, 58-year-old Don Stalkfleet of Roundup, MT.

Deputies discovered that Stalkfleet was driving on a suspended license, and the vehicle was not registered to him.

Prior to having the vehicle towed, Deputies took inventory of it’s contents and found four long guns in the vehicle.

A check of Stalkfleet’s criminal history showed that he was a convicted felon.

He was arrested for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and incarcerated at the Lincoln County Detention Center.

Nebraska Takes a Stand Against Bullying

bullyStand for the Silent is part of a statewide movement that began in 2012 in which youth and adults stand together against bullying. Bullying has been a continuous and fearful problem that has taken over many youth’s lives and Stand for the Silent is a day where the state can come together and bring awareness to the issue. More than 50,000 youth will participate on April 26 in communities across Nebraska.

“As an advocate for mental wellness, I have seen how much bullying has affected our schools, families, and our society in general. Bullying has become the cause of self-inflicted harm and worse, teen suicide. It’s time for all of us to take a stand to stop bullying,” said Senator Amanda McGill.

Glow sticks and pledge cards have been provided for those who have registered at www.serve.nebraska.gov. The glow sticks represent a candle light vigil and are something the youth can take with them to remember the event. The Stand for the Silent pledge will be recited followed by silence for seven seconds (to represent that every seven seconds someone is bullied) in commemoration for those who have been bullied.

This year the event is made possible from these sponsors: ServeNebraska, Mike Smith Live, Oriental Trading, Schaefer’s, State Farm and the University of Nebraska Lincoln Athletic Department.

For more information and how you can get involved, contact Cathy Plager, at 402-471-6226 or cathleen.plager@nebraska.gov.

Gering Man Convicted in Stomping Death Gets Parole

gavelA Gering man has been granted parole less than eight years after stomping to death a friend.

40-year-old Scott Kramer became eligible for parole this month. He’d pleaded no contest to manslaughter after prosecutors lowered the charge from second-degree murder. Kramer was sentenced on May 31, 2006, to 15 to 20 years in prison.

Kramer was convicted of kicking and jumping on 30-year-old Tim McGrath up to two dozen times. Cramer was wearing cowboy boots. Prosecutors said Cramer became enraged after the victim broke a videotape on Oct. 12, 2005, while they were drinking at Cramer’s apartment.
